leica M2 replacement

Recommended Posts

The MP has a meter and the controls are similar to an M2.  Loading is quicker and there are options for viewfinder magnification plus.  Both the MP and the M7 are available new and for a price can be configured through the a la carte program. On the secondhand market there are other choices such as the M5, the M6 Classic or M6 TTL plus previously owned versions of the MP and M7.  Any of these would be stepping away from a digital workflow and returning to film. This is a great place for answers and welcome to the forum.

Hi,

You don't mention why you are looking for a replacement, unless you got rid of the M2 when you bought the M9

My first M camera was an M2, which I still have.  Twenty years ago I bought an M6 and have been very happy with that.  The viewfinder isn't as bright and clear as the M2's, but I can use the meter without having to put my glasses on, which I have to do with the M2 (I cannot read the aperture setting on the MR meter)

If it wasn't for the meter reading, I'd use the M2 more.  So my sugestion would be an M6 if you want a built in meter or another M2 if you don't.

Best wishes,

Susie (now waiting for all the 'real photographers don't use a meter' comments!)

I think you'll be the happiest with an MP.

But, I must say, an M2 and an M9 make a great combination, as your M9 is a great tool toward going meterless with an M2, M3, or M4.  Use the M9 in manual mode with it set at ISO 160 (Portra 160), 400, or 800, and you'll be surprised at how quickly you'll learn your sunny 16 settings for those corresponding film speeds.  I find the M9 to be a seamless compliment with my meterless film bodies - you just might, as well.

Good luck, and welcome to the forum.
