Frame Counter

New to forum and for the most part Leica. I had a brief time with a Digilux 2 but computers and the digital workflow makes my head spin. So I purchased an M3 with a 50 Summicron F2 collapsible lens. Plan to process my own BW film and make prints. First time for all of this. Anyway, my frame counter does not reset to zero when the take out spool is removed. It is stuck at 40. Everything else seems to work smoothly with no issues. I plan to take notes with each frame as I learn the process so not a big deal for now. Is there a "home" fix or something that needs to be sent out? Once I run a couple of rolls and process, I will have a better feel as to whether all is working as it should. I do not want to send it anywhere just for the frame counter if all else is fine. Thank you.

I believe the counter is reset by the spring-loaded "catch" on the wind hub. This is pushed into the wind shaft by the spool, and should spring back out when the spool is removed. It could be stuck by solidified lube, or broken. You may be able to check it with a dental pick through the gap when the rear door is open and the spool removed:
