djdstone Posted April 17, 2015 Share #1 Posted April 17, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've had my M-240 for around 6/7 months now and the black paint along the top plate has already begun to brass. Not being a fan of the Lenny K style camera I though that the black paint finish would last longer that this. I never had this problem with the black paint on my M9. Advertisement Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Hi djdstone, Take a look here Black paint 'brassing'. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted April 17, 2015 Share #2 Posted April 17, 2015 In general, owning both, I would say the black coating ( it is not paint, certainly not the classic paint used on film Ms) of the M240 is more resilient than the M9 - Hard to prove either way without testing side by side, LK style, though.... arthury Posted April 17, 2015 Share #3 Posted April 17, 2015 I am having the same issue with mine as well. No such issues with my previous M9.
Herr Barnack Posted April 17, 2015 Share #4 Posted April 17, 2015 I thought people liked brassing on their black M cameras. If not, chrome is the way to go it would seem...
jaapv Posted April 17, 2015 Share #5 Posted April 17, 2015 Well, my M240 took two years to get nice brassed edges, my M9 one year. I would hardly call it an issue, though. I have my camera to use, and if it shows, it does not make any real difference at all to me.
djdstone Posted April 17, 2015 Author Share #6 Posted April 17, 2015 I would prefer to keep the paint as it is - I was assured that it wasn't an issue with the M-240 and I think that for it to start to brass in just 6 months is a bit much. I know there are fans of the look/aesthetic but I'm not one
Echo63 Posted April 17, 2015 Share #7 Posted April 17, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I like the look, but my M240 is just over a year old, has taken nearly 18,000 frames - and has 3 tiny little spots of brassing. my 1DX that i got around the same time however - have big spots of bare grey alloy (they do work a little harder though) I have found the M240 black paint to be pretty hardwearing.i suppose it all depends on how the camera is carried, used and treated too (constantly slung on a neck or shoulder and rubbing on fabric, hand carried or always in a bag, removed for a pic and replaced)
pico Posted April 17, 2015 Share #8 Posted April 17, 2015 You can get a transparent 'skin' to apply over all, or just selective surfaces of the camera from here. Just for the heck of it, I got a set for an M9 to see how it works. It's good enough for $16. I have to say that I'm perplexed that one would not understand that surface coating rubs away. jaapv Posted April 17, 2015 Share #9 Posted April 17, 2015 we used to pay a LOT more for (soft) black paint cameras....
djdstone Posted April 17, 2015 Author Share #10 Posted April 17, 2015 I think you've missed the point. I had an M9 for 3 years and that never started loosing paint like this new camera has.
jaapv Posted April 17, 2015 Share #11 Posted April 17, 2015 I'm not missing the point - my M9 lost its paint a lot faster than my M240 does. If I hazard a guess, they two are probably about the same in wear resistance, but the user cannot be aware what differences in usage the camera is exposed to over the years. We think we use the camera the same way year after year, but we most likely don't - a different bag with a less smooth inside might make a difference, a bang more or less in use, etc. And my point, I couldn't care less. The functionality is the same and I don't mind showing that I use my gear.
tookaphotoof Posted April 17, 2015 Share #12 Posted April 17, 2015 Mine shows brassing, dropping it out of the bag I forgot to close, onto a concrete floor, didn't help either. But hey, as Jaap says, it won't affect functionality. Apart from that I'm not planning on selling it any time soon.
lct Posted April 17, 2015 Share #13 Posted April 17, 2015 Black paint is made for brassing folks. Better order silver or black anodized bodies if you don't like that.
drdannn Posted April 17, 2015 Share #14 Posted April 17, 2015 It is a tool, after all. Am I going to body wrap it and save it for the next owner; like putting seat-covers on my leather car seats? Am I going to be so careful to keep it pristine that in the process I miss photographs? Admittedly it is tough at first. When I bought my M8 I treated it like a puppy dog. Now that I am 8 years in the Leica world (M240 now), I am less careful and get much more photos.

brentb Posted April 17, 2015 Share #16 Posted April 17, 2015 So is the Silver Chrome finish actually chome? As in chrome plated, like a car bumper? It doesn't look as shiny as most chrome I've seen, more like silver paint, if this is the case. Is it more durable than the black paint? djdstone Posted April 17, 2015 Author Share #18 Posted April 17, 2015 My point was the speed at which the M is brassing compared to the
jaapv Posted April 18, 2015 Share #19 Posted April 18, 2015 My silver chrome cameras suffer from scuffing. I have one black chrome camera. It shows silvering on the edges and the black chrome has dulled over three years. I prefer honest brass shining through.
Herr Barnack Posted April 18, 2015 Share #20 Posted April 18, 2015 It's chrome plating. There's a plating process called hard chrome - is that what Leica is applying on the chrome M cameras?
