For information on Texas's Painted Churches, see The Painted Churches of Texas.

For more information on the get-together, send me a PM or an email via the forum.

NOTE: The correct spelling of the name of the city is Schulenburg, NOT Schulenberg as shown above. Schulenburg is on Interstate 10 about midway between Houston and San Antonio.

The Painted Churches are not generally open to the public, but our circle of Leica enthusiasts has made a group reservation. All you need to do is join us!

JD--

Great!

Since I can't send you a PM, if you could send me an email or PM via the forum, I'll forward more specifics.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Philip and Andreas have fixed the problem with my ability to receive private messages, so feel free to PM me of any interest.

These churches are simple wooden affairs from the outside but beautifully decorated inside. Their founders were Polish and Czech, and the churches are painted as a remembrance of churches in the "Old Countries." Although neo-gothic outside, the interiors border on the baroque. (See the links I posted in the first post above.)

They're well worth a visit for anyone. On our Leica group's previous foray to see them some years back, there was even one visitor who flew in from Detroit, and he left satisfied. He has notified us that the only reason he's not coming back is that he has a previous commitment that weekend.

These 2004 pictures originated in an M6, were converted to Kodak's PCD format, thence to Photoshop. Because of that, their quality isn't as good as I'd like.

But they do give an idea of what one of these churches has to offer.

Note that the stained glass window dates from 1899 (a long time ago for us Texans). And the columns in the last picture are actually wooden but painted to look like stone.

Thanks for the thought, Pete. We'll miss you.

Yeah, it's a long way for something less than two centuries old. Maybe the weekend we're out there you should drop by Stonehenge for us? :D

Ravi--

I'd love to meet you. I hope you can make it, but we'll count you as tentative.

I'll send you a fuller data sheet if you can PM me your email address. That is, if PMs are possible with the new forum software. . . .

And I don't know how much time you'll have, but this section of Texas is three to four hours from Dallas by car.

I hope you can make it!

Just one last reminder of this visit to a little-known aspect of European influence in Texas.

We've so far got about a dozen people confirmed, but there's still room for more.

Basic details are above; PM me if you're interested.

Despite the recent flooding in some parts of Texas, the weather outlook for Schulenburg this Saturday is still decent, so the Painted Churches Photo Shoot is still on the schedule as of Tuesday the 26th of May.

Thanks to everyone who has contacted me with concerns and questions, but we're still "Go!"
