What is the best flash with bouncing capability for D109

Hi,

I am still looking for compact size, bouncing capability and fully compatible TTL flash for my D109.

I have a METZ 24 AF-1 which was working great with DLUX6 but it is not working with D109. I called to METZ, They replied that they don't have any compatible flash for D109 in their product range yet.

I asked to Nissin what about i40, But they replied I have to check it in one of camera store to verify with my camera. I mean they don't know if it is compatible or not?

Anyone have experience about this matter and help me?

Regards

I have just bought the Metz 52-AF1 flashgun (Leica/Panasonic fit) and it works very well with the D-Lux 109. It is powerful with bounce and tilt capabilities and personally I don't think it's too big when mounted on the camera, I have the Leica hand grip so the weight and size of the Metz flash is not really a handling issue for me.

Hope this is of help.

The Metz 44 AF-1 also works with the Type 109.  However, you need to download the latest firmware for the flash from the Metz.de website. The Metz 44 AF-1 does NOT work with the Type 109 without the new firmware download. Be aware, though, that the TTL mode works but doesn't register on the Type 109 Flash menu screen as "TTL".

Nissin i40 works well on my 109. Bounce and swivel inc TTL (with easy dial compensation of flash output for "fill flash" portrait effects)

I agree.  The Nissin i40 is fairly powerful for its size and tilts and swivels. It works well in TTL and has very convenient controls on the back of the camera. One point is that my copy is a very tight fit on the hot shoe and one must make sure that it is pushed firmly in until it clicks otherwise it does not work. This has improved with use.

I've tried the Metz 44 on the 109. I have loaded the latest firmware (v.3.0) but it doesn't fire and the Flash option in the Recording Menu isn't available. Any tips?

phlash46,

If the "Flash" option is grayed out then the camera does not detect that the flash is connected or that it is not turned "on".  Ensure that the flash is fully seated in the flash shoe by making sure that the clamping function is backed out all the way before sliding the flash into the hot shoe.  Then make sure that the flash is clamped into the hot shoe using the round clamping wheel on the flash shoe..  If the hot shoe pins don't make full contact then the flash won't register.  The "TTL" light should light up on the flash when its turned on.  Just to make sure that there is nothing wrong with the flash and the firmware download - you should be able to turn on the flash when its not connected to the camera and cycle through the "M" and "SL" functions.

Let me know if any of this make sense / works?  My 44 AF-1 is working fine (except for the fact that "TTL" doesn't register on the camera menu display.

I'll try it in the morning. Does it work with the Type 114?

B&H says this works on the Type 109 and 114: Panasonic LUMIX DMW-FL360L External Flash. I've got one on order (back ordered) and I'll post here once I get it.

Nope. Works on 109 but not on the 114. I talked to Leica and they say only the cf-22 works on the 114 that they know of.

I was wrong! The FL360 or 360L work on the types 109 and 114. You must have the shutter choice set to Manual Shutter, not Electronic or Auto for it to work on the 114.
