bocaburger Posted January 17, 2015 Share #3 Posted January 17, 2015 The only instance where I have used film emulation in any camera is the b&w one. I shoot raw+b&w jpeg-fine so if the image doesn't work in b&w I have a color one, plus the review image is in B&W. Otherwise I shoot only jpeg at the default setting. The exceptions were the M8 and M9 where I had to resort to DNG and PP because the color jpgs were often inconsistent and unreliable.
Joshua Lowe Posted January 18, 2015 Share #4 Posted January 18, 2015 I use DNG for anything I care about, but I shoot DNG+JPG in the B&W film mode so I have a quick reference.
Paul J Posted January 18, 2015 Share #5 Posted January 18, 2015 I understand the allure of them and why people use them, but film modes and presets are for the hordes on instgram with iPhones, to give the pictures 'something', to mimic something else. It's trivial at best and has no place in actual photography, IMO. I would go so far to say it ruins a lot of photos and that all these artless and chintzy presets and instagram filters have bought down the standards of photography. There is 'amateur' and there is something less, that is what it represents to me and to most photographers I know. I have no interest in synthetic, or fake at all. Learn how to do it in camera; that is the science, art, craft of photography and what I personally respect, take or leave.
KAD Posted January 18, 2015 Share #6 Posted January 18, 2015 I found taking my M3 or M6 produced better film look Much more fun also
Echo63 Posted January 18, 2015 Share #7 Posted January 18, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I don't use the film modes either, i have always shot DNG, but have recently started shooting 12mp jpeg along with the DNG. I acquired a Toshiba "Flashair" card from a work colleague, and have started using my iPhone with Filterstorm Neue to play with the images - so far just on Instagram, but can now easily and quickly send a pic back to the office in a hurry (much quicker than stopping to get the laptop and cardreader out and properly caption and PS a pic, plus i can do it on the run)
TheGodParticle/Hari Posted January 18, 2015 Author Share #8 Posted January 18, 2015 I shot some pictures in the film mode for entertainment, the results are not as grotesque as I thought they might be Looks like Leica know a thing or two about photography )))) What did scratch my eyeballs, at high ISO, due to the film mode, are the unholy combination of "film grain" and "digital noise" resulting in something I call "groin" problems :0))))) Take a look and see if the pictures are clawing at your eyes Welcome, dear visitor! TheGodParticle/Hari Posted January 18, 2015 Author Share #11 Posted January 18, 2015 In good light, i don't mind what Leica are cooking up with the M240 - of course, also depends on the lens you're using as the files have a higher contrast due to the "cooking" A lens with already high contrast might just be an overdose/crush the midtones At low light / high ISO, the files are pretty bad to my taste. For the lack of a better term to express myself, let me go with "lamination effect" along with groin problems that make it a no-go Welcome, dear visitor! TheGodParticle/Hari Posted January 18, 2015 Author Share #12 Posted January 18, 2015 Hard to tell on web jpegs. However, I feel that the best way to get a film look is to shoot film... True that. Also, "Film Mode" is actually more like low/high contrast presets. The only "film" property I noticed so far is the "grain" at high ISO. But the "grain" combining with the innate digital "noise" results in an eyesore I call "groin". This is nice for fooling around but is no serious match for actual film photography. Are you able to select and transfer only one image, or a selection of images to a phone or tablet when you use it? Or do you have to transfer everything? (like on the Eye-Fi Mobi cards) Does it affect the battery life a lot when you are using the camera like normal (no wifi connection)?

Or do you have to transfer everything? (like on the Eye-Fi Mobi cards) Does it affect the battery life a lot when you are using the camera like normal (no wifi connection)? I have only had it a week - so i cant really speak to battery life. The card is much slower to write files to/copy files off than the sandisk extreme i was using - startup time is quicker though. I am using the flashair app - again, i havent dug too far into what it can do, so far i have just been looking through the card, downloading a pic here and a pic there to the iphone. According to the app's help function - it is possible to select "download all" or select a just a few pics to download together. I dont believe it can push the files to the device as they are shot (i could be wrong though) Edited January 19, 2015 by Echo63
