Location is Abu Simbel in Egypt. Pics made about a month ago. Photography was forbidden inside the temple of Ramses 11 but I had travelled half way round the world to get these pics. That way, by starting at 4am and driving at 160kph for 3 hrs through the desert, I got a head start on the official tourist convoy who were speed limited to 100kph. I was able to finish by the time they were arriving. A smart/lucky break. The colour was very difficult to 'balance' (I use C1) because of the ground level fluoro in some areas. In actual fact the real colours of the murals is stunning. Regarding distortion, all I corrected was converging verticals to deservedly do justice to the grandeur of the place. The 24mm Elmarit is a really great lens. I should use it more. I have the 105/2.5 Nikkor in LTM also, it's a beast and the front rotates while focusing and I've been on the verge of selling it countless times but it's just such a nice lens I can't let it go. Jim Lager saw me shooting with it and zoned in from across the room. Mine's in near-mint cosmetics and unlike most Leitz lenses of that vintage the glass and coatings are still perfect. I have no issue with anyone getting their pictures. What I do have issue is the manner in which sooo many of them go about it. My M.O. is simple. Overall, I have paid a substantial amount of money to be in a position to make photographs, including payment to the 'banned' sites. I have no issue with paying to support these locations. However, in return I do expect relatively unimpeded opportunity to get photos, all without disruption to other visitors etc. The bans are mostly effective in preventing the 'slow blockers' and mostly enable me to discreetly get some of what I want. Discreet mode on the M9 helps this greatly. eg. my three pics above were all taken this way, as were 30 or 40 others. No one either saw me, was aware of me or was offended by me. I've never had any great temptation to "upgrade" to the M240, for all the quirks, the M9 does the job. I think I only came across one OEM shade for it and it was priced about half what I paid for the lens so I passed. I never noticed the flare, I'll have to look for it. I imagine a spray of flat-black enamel would cure it. I don't use the lens all that often, it's such a heavy beast for it's focal length.
