One of the biggest ashes around here. And healthy as well. Taken just after morning mist disappeared, D-lux 6.

Not sure this even belongs here, but it does contain a tree and an unexpected surprise. We had walked to the very tip of Point Lobos, a place called Whalers Cove - I thought the gnarly Monterey pine with the broken branch on the right and the rocky outcropping framed Pebble Beach in the distance nicely. Composed focused, and the moment I snapped the shutter a humpback whale breached and fell beck into the bay producing the white, foamy  splash……..the broken branch is even pointing at it .

Switched to a telephoto and stayed around for quite a while waiting for a repeat performance, but he had probably moved on and didn't come up again.

Although supposedly a hardy species eucalyptus trees on the whole can be finicky about where they are planted,

this little tree evidently did not appreciate the spot chosen for it, despite the lovely view, and gave up the ghost after a few years.

'Lone Cypress' the symbol of Pebble Beach, on the Monterey peninsula. Drought or no drought, you can be sure that tree will get everything it needs.
