Repairing my M3 in Sweden or Germany?

Hi,

So I bought my M3 well used and ever since the start the fastest shutter-speeds 1/500 and 1/1000 have ended up cutting the exposure. My conclusion is that the rear curtain travels slightly faster that the front one, thus overtaking it about half way through when the gap is very small.

So I assume it's a lubrication and clean issue.

Now, in Sweden there aren't too many places to do CLA's on Leicas as far as I know and I've received a quote from two of them. How does sending stuff in to Leica work? Is it something they do? Who do I contact and does anyone know a ball park figure for a CLA?

Cheers!

Hi,

See the list of suggested repairers on the blog http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-news/leica-repair-specialists/

I would personally advise not to send it to Leica - they charge a fortune for the same work, and I've heard that they actually sub out work on the older cameras anyway. Several years ago I was quoted about £500 - minimum - for a service on an M2.

Thanks and yes, I did have a look at that briefly, but saw nothing pertaining to sweden. Great to know about Leica, saves me from even considering it (and that doesn't include shipping and what I assume means much longer turnaround-time).

We do have a very renowned leica service guy her in Sweden, so it'll probably be fine, just need to pony up the dough.

Cheers!

In Sweden i recommend analogakameror.se.

Jag tror han bor i Sundbyberg så det borde passa om du är från Stockholm. Jag lämnade in min Leica M2 där för en genomgång, det gick både fort och var ganska billigt. Så ta en titt!

Tack Landberg!

About Leica sending out older cameras for repair by other technicians - at least my M4 was serviced and repaired by the techs in Solms and they did an amazing job, much better than than the non-Leica tech who previously serviced the camera for me.

1000 SEK for a CLA by Analoga Kameror is, in two words, dirt cheap.

Lycka till

Philip

i've been happy to use kameraservice in the netherlands for all types of work, and have also sent cameras and lenses to youxin ye and DAG in the usa.   if you do use any of the u.s. service guys, please remember to keep all your paperwork and shipping receipts, so you can show swedish customs that the camera was sent out of sweden for ''repair and return''.

good luck!

I can also recommend Mr. Jukka Kelotie from Foka Oy in Finland. Foka is official Leica distributor and Jukka is their #1 Leica service guy. So he would be a close by option instead of sending to Leica. You can reach him at jukka.kelotie(at)foka.fi

Example of his great work: http://jukkapro.blogspot.fi/2014_02_01_archive.html

note: not his blog, but someone recommending his work..
