Listing has ended on 28th, after 8 offers.

Over the last couple of years the same seller has listed it at various "BIN" prices between A$15,000 and A$165,000. Be interesting to know if it actually sold and if so, for how much.

Fake or not, it's a beautiful camera.

An original standard IIIG with Leicavit and (for example) a Summarit 5cm, is even more beautiful... :) .. and chasing around with care one can find one for a fraction of that hilarious cost... maybe even with box, case (for Leicavit-equipped body... ;) ) and some paper, acquiring a certified original item of a regularly listed camera... which is definitely a collectible which will keep a value, differently from an odd item which none can declare as original, being a never listed (or factory-documented) camera.

Auction ended at $54,500 with 1 offer.

It has ended previously with just 1 offer, so it will be interesting to see if this camera reappears from this seller.

I bet it will... ;)... fishing is a sport for patient guys... :p

This has been a mysterious topic for some time. The seller in this case quotes some of the expert literature on the subject, particularly Lager and  van Hasbroeck. Checking again on the quotes, I find that there is even some lack of consensus among the experts as to whether this is an actual model and also how it might have come into existence. Lager seems to feel that the possibility that the IIg is an upgrade of the Ig is 'remote', whereas van Hasbroeck quotes one source as saying that a conversion service from the Ig to the IIg was set up for an American Leica dealer who believed that he had a market for such cameras. There is also a reference in van Hasbroeck's book to this 'theory' accounting for a particular batch being produced to special order.

Lager says that Leitz delivery documents in those days were hand written and, in many cases, are difficult to decipher. He also says that some of the examples, illustrated in his book, were delivered as IIIgs . Finally, the serial number on the current example seems to be higher than those mentioned by Lager.

The value of an item on an open market is, of course, what people are prepared to pay for it. Anyone buying such an item for a high price should research the matter carefully as there does not appear to be definitive evidential material or, indeed, expert consensus on the matter.

The old maxim 'caveat emptor' certainly applies.

IIg is easy to make....

If the IIg would be painted black with white contact numbers, it could be argued this prototype was inherited by your Swedish grandfather, who was too nervous for the missing long times while waiting for Russian spies ...

But never forget the three royal crowns... :D
