It does appear that way here on the forum. A combination of file compression allied with the stark background?

Maybe Keith, could be just the way it is appearing here.

If anything, and I shudder to say this, you could "de-clarify" it. I'm always striving for the ultimate sharpness myself, and to make to "less sharp" seems criminal, but it would be worth a go.

Purely my opinion though.

A closer view of one of the roses in the bouquet.  Easier on the eye?

Yep. Maybe it is the stark colour contrast with the white background?

This one though, lovely. Sharp as though, but lovely.

JPEG, or processed RAW? Asking as interested to find out the sharpening used.

Gary

.dng processed in LR & PS (CC 2015).  I tend to use PS for final sharpening:-

  • New layer
  • Filter-Other-High Pass-radius 8.7 px
  • Change layer to 'Soft Light'
  • Hold down the Alt key and drag the layer thumbnail down to the Add Layer Mask icon
  • Click on the paintbrush and 'paint in' the areas you want to sharpen.
  • Adjust layer opacity (if required)
  • Voila!

Example here where I 'painted in' the sharpening only on the pale rose.  Would be interested to read other methodologies.

So, back to the big smoke today, had about 4 hours to while away, so took a walk along the waterfront. Left the T at home, took my old friend the X-Vario, shot exclusively in JPEG, with colour where I thought it nice, but mostly simple mono.

It really is just a fun and easy camera.

X-Vario, 30.7mm, 1/50th f8, ISO100.

Straight out of camera.

Just received my XV few days ago, it's really a great machine~

The packing is awesome and the camera feels very solid, even better than my beloved X100!

Picture is crispy sharp, but the AWB is somehow unreliable under indoor tungsten light condition compared with X100

Different cameras 'see' and interpret colours via AWB differently ... and tungsten colour temperature can vary either side of 3200ºK  … so might be better to use a custom white balance. I was using my XV today in difficult lighting so set a custom white balance.
