What do the Wiki's "ordinal" numbers mean?

I'm not sure this is the right forum as the question may concern the Wiki and how it organises information, rather than Leitz/Leica lenses as such. In such a case please feel free to move it.

What I am wondering is what the Wiki's "ordinal" number refers to? One can organise lenses by ordinal number (for instance here for screw mount lenses) but I find little logic in these numbers.

Apologies if it is a dumb question :o

I don't know, either.

However, I presume that the ordinal numbers serve to uniquely identify each type, thus providing a convenient "handle" for reference. That might serve to remove ambiguities when referring to similarly named lenses.

Just guessing.

In this case it appears to mean that the lenses are listed in the order of first year of manufacture.

I think.

Ordinals are very often used when manufacturer's naming conventions have no distinguishing order for the article.

We thought you would never ask ;)

The wiki has 3 lists, Ordinal, Focal-length & Type, for the Screw, M, R and Viso lens categories, with each containing the same group of lenses. The remaining lens categories, C, D and S, have fewer lenses and are without separate lists .

The ordinal numbers run from the first modular lens to the most recent issued lens: -1 20px-5elmar35-2.jpgElmar (I) f= 5 cm 1:3.5 , -178 50px-Sts.jpg TS-APO-Elmar-S 120mm f/5.6 ASPH.

Leica has issued ~178 lenses, and counting.
