Hello all

As i have said in other posts, my X1 is in for repair due to the pop up flash not staying in the body housing

This is after not a lot of use (will check actuation count if i can when i get it back) and certainly not much with the flash for sure

The cost of this is quoted at £387.64

Basically a quarter of the price of the camera to repair a design fault

This is the 'not happy' part of the title

Yes this is back with Leica

I groaned at my local dealer (who i bought it from originally second hand last February)

I am told it comes back with new flash parts (obviously) a new top plate and a service to the camera to make sure the timings are all calibrated and sensor is good etc

Still steep though methinks?

If you bought it last February ie Feb.2012 then maybe the dealer should cover the repair under the guarantee? Was it purchased from a Leica dealer? Did you by the camera with a guarantee and if so what is the guarantee period?

I did hint at this being disappointing to be charged for a design fault so new into me using it

Fell on deaf ears though

Last Feb meaning last year 2011 so im a bit out with Leica and shop warranty unfortunately. Yes it was from an official Leica dealer

I did plead about age and little use etc but, again, deaf ears

Believe me mate, i am from Yorkshire and dont take matters lightly where money is concerned

I'm sorry to read about your problem.

Just on a sidenote: any new product bought with the European Union as a mandatory defects liability (given by law) of 2 years.

This does include your X1 ...

I would probably not pay so much for a repair to retain the flash in the body. It is a design fault and most users have learned to live with it. I avoid covering the flash with a finger and that reduces the pop-up rate. It is an irritant, but I have managed to control it rather than lose the camera for some time with Leica.

If i could go back with a warranty claim then i would believe me

It is very disappointing for this but thats life

With regard to the pop up flash and living with it - i did try this (had to do this more like) by using a rubber band to stop it popping up/out. Not a good look or a proper solution really as it also kept misfiring and flashing even when in the body!

If it was stuck inside (instead of not staying in and always popping out) then this wouldnt have been a problem. External flash and no more issue

It has put me off buying an M8/M9 i must say though

After looking at my sales receipt it was bought in August last year so is covered by Leica Dealer warranty

(Note to self - dont jump gun and always check the smallprint)

In this case, try contacting Leica directly - it might help.

My flash has just developed this fault. Probably no more than 500 shots, and 3 months old.

Combined with the manual focus problem, I am seriously beginning to regret buying this camera.

Twice I have bought new Leica camera bodies - both will have had to go back to Solms.

I realize that buying ANY electronics from ANY brand is always hit and miss, with the need for luck to avoid a dud.

My X1 has 10s of 1000s of photos and no prob so far. it did get a nice clean up and tightening of dials some months back since I realize warranty was about to lapse. Granted I have only used the flash twice haha....

I have already posted that service in Singapore Leica is top notch, hence I am the least worried.

Thanks for the comment

Its back with the dealer and they are sorting it on my behalf directly with Leica

Kind regards

Mark,

As long as it is within 2 years I cannot see any reason how leica can make u pay anything for repairs. You should stand on firm ground on this issue. You shouldnt be "hinting" if they insist you pay, you should state outright you shouldnt be paying, esp for one from Yorkshire haha :)

And my experience has been top notch pertaining to service, even better than Nikon here which I consider superb as well.

Did you check the estimate? Leica sometimes quotes a price and then in small letters at the bottom the amount due turns out to be 0.00 because of guaranty.

A different experience, my X1, purchased new from a Leica dealer in July 2010, had the battery retention clip fail.  I dropped it off at the local Leica Gallerie, and much to my surprise, it showed up about a month later repaired free of charge.  This is the second time I have received a free repair, an M6TTL/LHSA with a shutter fault being the other, well past the warranty period.

I believe, but have no direct proof, that they take condition, repair history for the type of failure, and purchase location into consideration in determining if they provide an out-of-warranty repair for no cost.  My X1 looked factory fresh upon submission to repair.
