salim Posted July 23, 2011 Share #1 Posted July 23, 2011 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, I love taking landscape, I mean serious landscape photos and occasionally seascapes. One of the reason i bought the M9 is to have all around camera. So i took the 4 wheeler and went up to the mountain to see to get a decent landscape photos with as much vibrant as possible. Lets play a game, and no cheating please. Can you tell which of the two images below belong to the Canon 5D Mark II and which one belong to the Leica M9?. And let me know which one you find it better? And let me know your thoughts of M9 being a serious landscape camera? It seems the photos are not showing, follow my blog in the link below and you will see the photos and let me know. http://salimblog.com/2011/07/leica-m-9-vs-canon-5d-mark-ii-landscape/ Edited July 23, 2011 by salim

250swb Posted July 23, 2011 Share #2 Posted July 23, 2011 And let me know your thoughts of M9 being a serious landscape camera? I can't think of a reason why it isn't a serious landscape camera. There are no rules on these things even if somebody wanted to invent one. A prime lens is just as valid as a zoom lens, and the body of the camera is just a box to record the image in. It would be nice to see the images you tried to post as I suspect you are trying to make some point. But seriousness is more in the mind of the photographer than a particular type of camera, which is just a means to an end, and either suits your style or not. salim Posted July 23, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted July 23, 2011 250swb Mainly I couldnt find serious landscape professional photos online taken by the Leica. All the top landscape photographers have their top notch DSLR. And I all I heard is that the leica its good for the streets mainly So I posted the topic to show you two images one from the Canon 5D Mark II and one from the Leica. Is the IQ different in your opinion or they both are good what do you think?

adan Posted July 23, 2011 Share #9 Posted July 23, 2011 Serious landscape camera = 8 x 10 700 megapixels or bust! As to the M9 vs. 5D2 - properly processed, there will likely by no difference between their images. There may be a difference in the photographers' chiropractic bills, however.

giordano Posted July 23, 2011 Share #13 Posted July 23, 2011 What the hell is a ‘’landscape’’ camera anyway….. serious or otherwise? It's a huge black tent with a lens on one side. To take a picture, you coat the landscape inside the tent with (liquid) emulsion. Then make the exposure, and spray on developer and fixer before removing the tent.
Popular Post denoir Posted July 23, 2011 Popular Post Share #14 Posted July 23, 2011 As to the M9 vs. 5D2 - properly processed, there will likely by no difference between their images. There may be a difference in the photographers' chiropractic bills, however. Different lenses, very different images. CCD sensor vs CMOS sensor, latitude in the highlights (5D2) vs latitude in the shadows (M9) and the list goes on. Two very different tools. The M9 is lighter and more convenient which is a blessing when hiking while the 5DII allows for accurate framing (TTL, live view). I just returned from a three week long trip touring the national parks in the US southwest and brought both cameras. I ended up using the M9 for 95% of my photos. You can see some of them here and judge if the M9 is a "serious" landscape camera: Part 1: Overview Part 2: Grand Teton & Yellowstone Part 3: Mesa Verde, Arches & Canyonlands Part 4: Monument Valley, Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon & Horseshoe bend Part 5: Zion, Death Valley & Yosemite I was in fact so happy with the performance of the M9 and unhappy with the weight of the 5DII that when I got home I immediately ordered a NEX-C3 to be used as a backup for the M9 (I don't expect to use it). The 5DII will stay at home for my next trip.
asmith Posted July 23, 2011 Share #15 Posted July 23, 2011 When you are my age, the main requirement for a landscape camera is that it should be light andveasy to carry when walking on rough ground. Although I don't have one, I should think the X1 would be near perfect but I find the M9 and a 35 mm pretty good. Alwyn
mgreernz Posted July 23, 2011 Share #16 Posted July 23, 2011 A serious camera? I gain a great deal of fun and enjoyment from mine. . But if it's a question about the capability of an M9 as a landscape camera: well, that's 99.9% of my photography these days - and it seems to me that the M9 and its companion lenses out-perform my abilities every time. Sure, I'm a Leica evangelist. But over almost 60 years of living with a camera in my hands, it's not always been Leica. It was sometimes Nikon (an F2 & F4 kit), Canon (most recently 5D & 5DmkII) and years back, Agfa, Minolta, Mamiya and goodness knows what else. Today, my M9 (as too, my M3 and IIIf) achieves everything and more that I ever expect of it in every landscape I ever have the good fortune of enjoying. It's my skill, rather than the capability of the M9, that's usually found wanting. And ps - me too. These days, thank goodness the M9 isn't the weight of my earlier Nikon or Canon kits. I can tramp around with it all day and still feel as if I might live til the 'morrow.

theno23 Posted July 23, 2011 Share #18 Posted July 23, 2011 Great sensor, great lenses, compact, very little vibration when you trip the shutter, what's not to like? If I shot with my Nikon and M9 side by side I doubt you'd see much difference without blowing up to huge sizes though.
