fotolebrocq Posted May 10, 2011 Share #1 Posted May 10, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I bought a new silver 35 cron last year and the plastic hood easily gets knocked off. Pull the camera out of a bag, the hood comes off. Brush against someone, the hood comes off. All the small metal latches appear to slot into the lens OK. Does anyone have experience of this and is there a fix or an alternative hood that works? Thanks Tony
Advertisement Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 Hi fotolebrocq, Take a look here Hood for 35mm summicron asph?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
250swb Posted May 10, 2011 Share #2 Posted May 10, 2011 I've had the lens cap come off many times, but the hood on mine is rock solid. As reference the hood should butt right up to the front of the lens with no more than a 1.25mm gap between the rear of the hood and the aperture ring. jaapv Posted May 10, 2011 Share #3 Posted May 10, 2011 (edited) I dislike the hood intensely. It fits well, but touch one off the buttons accidentally and off it comes. It blocks the viewfinder as well. That is, it did until I cut a little window in the upper lefthand corner (Elmarit 28 hood style), which makes it better. An alternative is the Heavystar 35/50 screw-in vented hood, which is a copy in shape (except for the screwing in part) of the old Leica 12585 H hood. fotolebrocq Posted May 10, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted May 10, 2011 Thanks guys - yes Jaap, me too. It somewhat spoils what is an otherwise lovely lens. But thanks for your reply which got me looking around at screw in vented hoods and I have just ordered one Tony
Jeff S Posted May 10, 2011 Share #5 Posted May 10, 2011 Are we talking about the same hood...part #12526 A42? Mine is solid as a rock...hasn't budged in years. Maybe you're describing a newer version? Jeff
jaapv Posted May 10, 2011 Share #6 Posted May 10, 2011 Yes, that is the hood we are talking about.
gyoung Posted May 10, 2011 Share #7 Posted May 10, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yes, that is the hood we are talking about. I find mine quite difficult to get off (and to put on for that matter), compared to (say) the 12585 on the older Summicron. Gerry

gyoung Posted May 10, 2011 Share #9 Posted May 10, 2011 A 12504 is your friend. .... but seems to get silly money when I looked, and so I looked at various far eastern imitations, and still have them somewhere. I like the vented type hoods and have used them for many years on the older Summicrons. My main objection to the standard asph hood (apart from the 'odd' shape) was the intrusion into the viewfinder frame. Eventually cut a hole in the appropriate corner as described elsewhere so that I can see through, as in the 21 and also I notice in the hood for the aspheric 35/1.4 and a few others. Maybe you're describing a newer version? I was wondering the same thing. I've owned three 35 Summicron ASPH lenses and have never had a problem with the hood coming off. Very solid indeed. As others have suggested, the £20+ rubber hood cover is another matter altogether.
gyoung Posted May 11, 2011 Share #12 Posted May 11, 2011 My main objection to the standard hood is the >£20 every time you lose the cover... Fortunatley I haven't lost one yet, but I don't used the cap very often. Gerry
Jeff S Posted May 11, 2011 Share #13 Posted May 11, 2011 I was wondering the same thing. I've owned three 35 Summicron ASPH lenses and have never had a problem with the hood coming off. Very solid indeed. I think this situation may be analogous to the M9 discussion, where various people on the forum post about problems, but the majority of happy people say nothing. Perhaps those with 35 Summicron hood problems should look at this in the same light. Jeff
jaapv Posted May 11, 2011 Share #14 Posted May 11, 2011 I don't feel it as a problem I just prefer another hood.
Jeff S Posted May 11, 2011 Share #15 Posted May 11, 2011 I understand the blockage of the viewfinder; that's an inherent design issue. But, falling off easily is indeed a problem; just one I suspect might in the minority. Jeff

Jeff That seems a little unfair - My M9 is by far the most satisfying camera I have ever owned (also have owned 1Ds Mk111, 5D Mk11, 1D Mk111) and has produced more keepers than any of them. The 35 cron is a lovely lens but the problem I have with it's hood is irritating and I was looking for some help with a fix (which Jaap gave me)..
Jeff S Posted May 12, 2011 Share #17 Posted May 12, 2011 (edited) I think maybe you missed my point, Tony. No intent to belittle your personal situation. The point was to put the hood problem in perspective to everyone else who owns the hood; just like others who responded to your concern have couched M9 problems in the same light in many other forum threads. Just some light banter, as we're prone to do here on the forum, without intent to derail the thread. Hope you solve your hood issues. One possibility, if I'm correct that your experience is not predominant, is to try another one or have Leica fix yours. I really like mine, but then mine fits securely. The only hood I've replaced is the one for the 28 Summicron asph, which I just find too large. The 35 Summilux asph hood is a good substitute in that situation. I didn't like the Heavystar version for that lens. Jeff PS I've supported those who have defended the M9 (see comments in many other threads). I think Leica have done a terrific job producing that camera, and that "teething" problems were inevitable with technical challenges related to full frame, IR filtration, etc. Edited May 12, 2011 by Jeff S
fotolebrocq Posted February 24, 2012 Author Share #18 Posted February 24, 2012 (edited) An update on this issue - I did buy the screw in round vented hood and it performed well. The only problem was that the lens cap couldn't be used with the hood on so not entirely successful. As many on this post seemed to suggest they had no problem I eventually sent my 35mm summicron asph to Solms for service and to check the hood. It came back yesterday and it's now perfect. Apparently the lens 'tube' had to be replaced but as it was under warrantly there was no charge. The hood is extremely robust now and cannot be knocked off. Incidentally, the lens went with my M9 which has been upgraded to M9P silver - for me this is well worth the cost as the camera is now as new and looks very smart. The controls are slicker too - the wheel on the rear runs very smoothly (it was a little stiff before) and the on/off switch is smoother. Together with the year's warranty, CLA and sensor clean a good package Tony Edited February 24, 2012 by fotolebrocq
DKbRS Posted February 25, 2012 Share #19 Posted February 25, 2012 (edited) I recently bought a 2nd-hand 35mm Summicron ASPH and it came with this hood. Is this one of the hoods that is being referred to in this thread? It's pretty secure when attached but I've been told that it is not the original hood for the lens. I don't like this hood as one can't use the lens cap with it. Welcome, dear visitor!
