Advertisement Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 Hi ho_co, Take a look here Erwin Puts' newest Compendium nearing completion. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
vickko Posted January 9, 2011 Share #2 Posted January 9, 2011 Great, I'm looking forward to buying it. Vick
marknorton Posted January 9, 2011 Share #3 Posted January 9, 2011 Does that mean the bottom will fall out of the market for the previous version. I should sell!
ho_co Posted January 9, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted January 9, 2011 Not to worry, Mark. The new version is a parchment-printed collectable limited edition. But I do understand that Mr Puts is planning a re-issue of the original for later in the year, so maybe it's wise to watch the prices.
Rick Posted January 9, 2011 Share #5 Posted January 9, 2011 Howard, will there be a special tit-cover edition?

Well Erwin did tell us that the new one will be a limited run of 1000. You need to mail him if you want one. If you know the back story, you won't bet your house on a reprint of the last edition Looking at the bizarre prices people are trying to sell the old edition for, I decided to place my copy under guard. The book should be ready to ship in the fourth week of March 2011. Howard, Many thanks for the pointer. I sure don't want to miss out on this one. Just ordered via PayPal. Best, K-H. marknorton Posted January 23, 2011 Share #9 Posted January 23, 2011 Yes, thanks for the information, I've ordered as well. PayPal may have its detractors but it makes this kind of transaction very simple compared to the hassles of international bank transfers.
mby Posted January 24, 2011 Share #10 Posted January 24, 2011 Yes, thanks for the information, I've ordered as well. PayPal may have its detractors but it makes this kind of transaction very simple compared to the hassles of international bank transfers. Electronic EURO-Transfer in the EU is now pretty much a piece of cake, and very, very cost effective, too. - But I do agree, PayPal has its merits. Best, Michael
Jager Posted January 24, 2011 Share #11 Posted January 24, 2011 Thanks for the heads-up on this, Howard! I, too, have placed my order through PayPal. This looks to be as definitive a reference on Leica and its products as has ever been produced. I can't wait!
chrism Posted January 25, 2011 Share #12 Posted January 25, 2011 Looking forward to March! The sample first chapter is very readable. Chris
Jager Posted January 26, 2011 Share #13 Posted January 26, 2011 I wouldn't disagree, Rich. I'd characterize Erwin's English writing as "dense." I'm guessing English is not his first language. A lot of people have a tough time reading him. But I've always found his insights to be worth the extra effort to parse those words and try and understand what he is saying. He brings a uniquely rich set of perspectives, albeit with a technical bias. Guys like Sean Reid (who I also recommend) bring a more generalized, photographer-centric view to thier writings. I'm also guessing that Erwin's 'Compendium' is mostly a labor of love - with our soon-to-be printed copies coming out of self-publishing arrangement. I agree the editing and typesetting expertise we would expect from a professional publishing firm would be nice, but is probably not in the cards. jaapv Posted January 26, 2011 Share #14 Posted January 26, 2011 (edited) Don't forget his experiences with a professional firm for his first compendium were disastrous. Edited January 26, 2011 by jaapv
jaapv Posted January 26, 2011 Share #15 Posted January 26, 2011 I'm sure Puts could have found someone to help. He could..

hoppyman Posted January 26, 2011 Share #17 Posted January 26, 2011 I think that is pretty tough comment on the book considering that no-one has seen the finished product as yet. Looking at the index that shows greatly expanded content might be a fairer assessment. Give the man a fair go. In my opinion content is king as with photography but I have no reason to suppose that the new book will not be polished and of the standard of the first. I have that one and ordered the new one without hesitation. Anyone who downloaded the free versions of the first may recall that the layout etc was basic as well. Not so the printed volumes. I would speculate that Erwin will have no difficulty in selling out his planned limited run and I both applaud his efforts and wish him every success.

You need to mail him if you want one.If you know the back story, you won't bet your house on a reprint of the last edition I have sent an email to Erwin, sent the money by PayPal (he hasn't accepted it) and I have asked for confirmation - no reply. I'm not feeling particularly confident ...
glenerrolrd Posted February 1, 2011 Share #20 Posted February 1, 2011 I am a little confused . He initially asked for an email expressing an interest to buy. The process was that he would send you the ordering instructions when the book was ready via email. Is he now asking for a paypal payment based on his blog post?
