Here's my latest addition to my personal collection - a 1945 Leica IIIC K Grey that was originally delivered on 7.7.45 as a LOOKX ( IIIC K with SOORE *Summitar f2/50 lens* ) to the Amerik. Armee (US Army) on shipment 8152.

Then ca. 1948 sent back to the factory for a very rare conversion to Chrome finish, keeping the original Kugellager shutter and parts and adding factory "Sharkskin" covering to the original shell.

(less than 20 cameras were modified like this ca. 1948/49 by the factory).

I just added this beautiful Black Paint MOOLY C motor, a present from Christmas to the camera - as originally delivered as MOOLY-C # 5481 that was shipped to Munich on 7.5.48.

(this motor was formerly owned by the late Fred C. Sternenberg the former President of the LHSA).

I added the OKARO filter, a "wartime" top logo engraved SOOPD hood and a ROSOL finder to effect a 1948/50 era Leica "Sports" rig as used by many pro Leica shooters in that post-war era.

Enjoy!

Tom

PS: If anyone has a pair of ORIGINAL Leitz "Lug Rings" from that era to finish this off, please let me know :)

Sorry, I lost a bit. ... to "try to do" something similar.

hahahahaha you mean try to "find" something similar..... :)

The chrome camera and black motor look very good together and are well, somewhat still attainable? (the Black Paint MOOLYC that is), even if they are expensive $3,500 to $4,500 each, depending on condition.

The Black Paint MOOLY C motors were issued 1947 to 1950 only.

I might part with this rare combo if the price is right? Or also trade it for a MOOLY C K Grey paint motor in Excellent Plus or better condition......

Thank you Tom, I'm pleased to have amused you. However I meant what I said. Since I retired I now have time to look for interesting things and it is amazing what there is about and unappreciated. I am sure many Forum members have stories of rare finds and I have found my quota. Of course, "to do" something similar would involve "finding" the component parts; but I did say "similar", not "identical" as I do appreciate the difficulty in assembling such a set. In that I believe congratulations to you are in order. Unfortunately I do not have the financial wherewithall to avail myself of your offer; in any event, I much prefer the thrill of the chase. Kind regards, David

Yes, David good luck with that.....it took me 15 years to find the right motor, many I have seen or found were in poor condition or also broken, this one was just right and I bartered/traded in a very nice deal :)

Nice to see someone else with one :)

I might be selling mine now, I still haven't deciided , or maybe I'll trade it for something equally as rare? I don't know if I'll keep the IIIC K that's with it now? I'm undecided, I'm not putting it up for sale offically, it there's enough interest, yes then maybe I'll run an ad?

.........a good friend of mine as a very rare WW2 era Leica IIIC K that needs a CLA and some vulcanite and shutter curtain restoration and I think I might have to part with the IIICK Chrome/Sharkskin - MOOLY C combo to move on to this next project.......if anyone has a serious interest in either write me at:

Recently I added in my collection these very nice 1950 IIIc body with "shark skin" cover. Is it true that Leitz really used this kind of vulcanite alternative? During a little time I have a fear that this cover was not original.

An original IIIcK chrome is more rare than the grey version, which I have. I put in bids for a IIIcK chrome at an auction about a year ago, but I dropped out when the price started to soar. The camera shown above is a chrome conversion from about 1948, but Leica did a good job on this as the usual 'pitting' on the chrome from that era is not evident. The sharkskin is a very nice addition and it definitely gives a better grip. I have a IIIc converted to a IIIf Black Dial with self-timer which kept its sharkskin covering during the conversion. My camera is equipped with a humble Leicavit SYOOM. The MOOLY C motor shown above looks very nice indeed. This post will have me looking around for one.

I have posted some photos of my postwar and war time Leica 'c' family on the recent thread on sharkskin Leicas. Here is a link; it is post no 5.

The 'c' family underwent many changes and variations during the 1940s, but, apart from the red shutter and grey models, they are not as prized as they should be compared to Leica cameras which came before and after that time.
