faraz Posted June 23, 2010 Share #1 Posted June 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) We lost our M9 along with the noctilux in a restaurant in redacted. Definitely my fault, we forgot it on the table (was with kids who were acting a little hyper so picking up the camera from table slipped my mind). We went back within an hour but the camera was gone. The restaurant was no help at all - the fact is the camera was right next to the signed credit card bill redacted. When we went back in, tredacted (wtf? redacted?) Anyway, very heart broken about the loss. Registered the serial numbers with Leica as stolen, not sure what else to do.
Advertisement Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 Hi faraz, Take a look here M9 with noctilux gone!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
cocker Posted June 23, 2010 Share #2 Posted June 23, 2010 Anyway, very heart broken about the loss. Registered the serial numbers with Leica as stolen, not sure what else to do. You haven't reported it to the police? Notified your insurance?
Marty Posted June 23, 2010 Share #3 Posted June 23, 2010 Sorry to hear that, very agonising. Was there any CCTV in the restaurant?

dpattinson Posted June 23, 2010 Share #5 Posted June 23, 2010 Report it to the police. Check for CCTV in and around the restaurant. Offer a reward (in the restaurant) - you can do this 'blind' where you pay the restaurant owner when you get the camera back, so that he/she can pass on to the 'finder'. Might be that redacted did take it, but paying $500 reward is a lot cheaper than losing the camera. oh - and google for any second hand camera stores nearby, or pawnshops and go take a look. you can fax or email the camera details to the camera shops in town, then they know it's stolen. faraz Posted June 23, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted June 23, 2010 You haven't reported it to the police? Notified your insurance? Which insurance would cover this sort of thing? Home owners? Car? I don't have any other.
mjw Posted June 23, 2010 Share #7 Posted June 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a "personal articles" policy on my camera equipment as well as other important items (wedding rings, watches, etc). The cost is minimal and you are covered in the event of loss or theft.
AlanJW Posted June 23, 2010 Share #8 Posted June 23, 2010 Which insurance would cover this sort of thing? Home owners? Car? I don't have any other. Sorry about this. You must feel awful. In addition to the reward suggestions, check your homeowners policy as it may cover it and it is also worth calling your broker. Without a specific rider for the policy you may be limited in what you can collect (but still might be something). For sure you will need receipts etc., and may have to make a police report (some policies specifically cover "mysterious diasappearance). You can get "valuable items" coverage fairly cheaply as an add on to most policies and the one I have will pay replacement value up to a per item limit and up to an overall ceiling. Worth it for the peace of mind.
Stealth3kpl Posted June 23, 2010 Share #9 Posted June 23, 2010 I would try posting the serial number on every digi site, and contact local stores where the culprit might try to order a charger. Sorry for your loss. Pete

stevem7 Posted June 23, 2010 Share #11 Posted June 23, 2010 Oh man, I so feel for you. What restaurant was it? deleted deleted. If he does find it, what you do after that is up to you Again, I feel for you because I know how devastated I would be if this happened to me. BTW, I would be happy to post your story on my site, with the name of the restaurant in case anyone out there happens to find it or come across it being sold. I have quite a few readers in the Phx AZ area. If so, let me know the details. Steve
J_Thompson Posted June 23, 2010 Share #12 Posted June 23, 2010 Sorry for your loss but you should immediately go to the police, tell them the outfit's value, and see what they can do in light of the camera being near your credit card bill and your waiter leaving work without finishing his shift. deleted. Just lying to an officer is enough to get one in serious trouble, so the perp just might "remember" what happened to your camera. Good luck, I wish you well and keep us informed of the outcome. The incident makes me think to install a better insurance for my own gear ... Yes, very sad. My best insurance so far has been that it never leaves contact with my body when away from home, I am just to prone to forget stuff on a table too. faraz Posted June 23, 2010 Author Share #16 Posted June 23, 2010 Thank you very much for your kind words everyone. I would go to the police as soon as I am back in redacted. Its just a personal thing, I grew up in a third world country where going to Police is a nightmare, especially if they find out what the value of the lost item was for example (bribery, potentially additional robberies, kidnappings may follow). Its obviously not the case in Phoenix, I am sure but I grew up with these feelings of not being able to trust Police so have been reluctant so far. But based on what you guys are saying, I think this may be a good course of action. I would like to add to this post that Samy's Camera in Los Angeles has taken really good care of me. I originally got my camera from them and my biggest concern (after the financial loss) was inability to find the noctilux and m9 for a while but Samy's camera took care of me and not only found me an M9 and noctilux but also gave me significant discount on both based on my horrible experience. Thank you very much.
andybarton Posted June 23, 2010 Share #17 Posted June 23, 2010 So, you have written off the cost of an M9 and a Nocti AND gone out and bought a replacement for both? Without any insurance. Nice.
faraz Posted June 23, 2010 Author Share #18 Posted June 23, 2010 The waiter was not shifty looking or foreign (I think we have been past the phase where we used to call Italians foreign). I admit I have no proof, but the server was already at our table picking up the dishes as we were leaving. Doesn't change the fact that I have no recourse against him or the restaurant. As for insurance, I did not bother with it because I asked my broker about covering jewelery and guns and the coverage (default) was limited to $250. Yes!! $250 and no coverage for cash. I was going to update the policy but have been very busy since then and had the camera swiped before the changes were made.
glenerrolrd Posted June 23, 2010 Share #19 Posted June 23, 2010 [quoted remark deleted You should carefully read your policy limitations . Jewelry and guns are a special category on some policies with all other personal articles being handled differently. You do not necessarily need a policy rider to cover personal articles. With that said you should not make a claim for a modest amount as it counts as a claim and can affect your homeowners policy in the future. Policies are written differently so check to be sure. You might also look at Jono s post about how he got his m8 back in a similar situation. Handled very professionally and he got it back. Pressure on the owner worked with no blame established . holmes Posted June 23, 2010 Share #20 Posted June 23, 2010 Notify the redacted Police. It will be entered into various national computers, plus if the "perp" tries to sell it, the pawn shop owner is required to report all transactions.
