Not quite a mountaineer but the great explorer Wilfred Thesiger used a Leica throughout all his years of travel, in the Empty Quarter and Arab world, in Africa and all his Asian travels. In Arabia he kept his camera in a goat skin bag to protect it from the sand and continued to do so for many years after. In 1934 he bought a Leica 11 and used it until 1959 when he changed to a Leicaflex. His book of photographs "Visions of a Nomad' contain some of the most amazing pictures of a world that has for the most part, now passed on.
