This apparition buzzed the small market town of Petersfield yesterday, bedecked in camouflage and RAF livery.... just managed to capture this with the new LX3.
Pete will no doubt identify this airframe..... as will many others, I'm sure..... one-of-our-planes-is-missing.jpg

In RAF service they were Dakotas. I flew many times in civilianised ones and can still remember the smell, a subtle compound of oil, aviation fuel, leather with a hint of cabbage and vomit (mixed passenger/freight service).

Thanks for the comments. It was a C-47 Skytrain in full RAF livery and comouflage. It wasn't at tree top level but it was pretty damn low and gave a fantastic view as it flew twice across the town. What a great aircraft, possibly the second most evocative aircraft after the Spitfire?

I had to smile when I saw this image. Just a few days ago, a Dakota (DC3) and Skymaster (DC6) flew over my house on there way to land at Eros Airport in Windhoek. Namibia Commercial Aviation is a company that operates and rebuilds old aircraft like these. I never realized just how huge and how much wingspan the DC6 actually had.
