Default Armco...

I took a walk along Phase 4 of the Welsh Highland Railway project today.

On this section we have to construct two 'accommodation' bridges to allow cattle to get from one side of the line to the other twice a day, for milking. The bridges are being constructed around these huge Armco tubes - the second one can be seen in the distance.

The peak in the distance, incidentally, is Cnicht, sometimes called the 'Welsh Matterhorn'.

R8, DMR, Vario-Elmar 21-35, 200 ASA. Developed in Lightroom.

Good shot John. Is this the reason I was sent on a diversion at Garreg on Monday this week? Obviously not because you were out taking photos!

Hi Ian

If you mean the diversion at Garreg Llanfrothen, it has nothing to do with the WHR but is a result of damage caused to the bridge at Aberglaslyn (Pont Aberglaslyn) by heavy lorries diverted during the closure of the Prenteg-Aberglaslyn road earlier in the year, whilst an underbridge was being rebuilt. At least one of the heavies collided with the bridge parapet whilst negotiating the turn off Pont Aberglaslyn and pushed it into the river. The highways people have also been resurfacing between Pont Aberglaslyn and Nantmor.

We'll have to close the Llanfrothen-Prenteg road for a few days later this year whilst we construct the WHR level crossing at Pont Croesor, by the Osprey Centre, so be warned!

At the moment our efforts at causing traffic jams are centred on the Britannia Bridge at Porthmadog, where we are installing tramway-style tracks along the roadway for the connection between the WHR and the Ffestiniog. The track installed so far has already bagged 3 cyclists... (despite there being prominent 'stop and dismount' notices...)

Thanks for the warning John - better than the radio reports!

I saw the tramway style track at Porthmadog as well, can't wait to see a train crossing there. Didn't manage a Cadwaladr's ice cream this time as couldn't get a parking space in the main street (too tight to pay).

Try going down Snowdon Street (East at the crossroads by Woolworths) there's almost always free on-street parking at the far end - but you may have to go beyond where we're building the second WHR street crossing in Porthmadog...

If you're after really good ice cream try the independent outlet in Beddgelert - your only problem will be deciding which of the many flavours to buy...
