Default USS Torsk

A forward torpedo tube of the submarine USS Torsk, a World War II vintage ship having the distinction of firing the last torpedo and sinking the last Japanese war ship of World War II on August 14, 1945. She is now moored in Inner Harbor of Baltimore, Maryland.

Peter -

Excellent angle, depth, details, light and color. And it's not wildlife!

Default gorgeous photography, Peter

instruments of death can be so beautiful
I imagine the light here was marginal, but your combination of lens/camera/technique delivered the goods
that bunny is a bit of an anachronism as Playboy was not published until well after WW II

The Torsk was on active service until 1968, well after the appearance of the "Bunny".

Stuart, Arthur, Henri, and Neal,

Thank you for commenting.

Stuart, I just imagined that bunny was real and that the 50mm lens was actually a 500mm lens. It was easy then.

Great shot! I've been aboard her. It is a fine exhibit. I can't help chuckling at the name though, "torsk" is cod in Norwegian.

Louis and Carl,

Thanks for your comments.

The US Navy's naming policy for the submarines back then was to use names of fishes for them. That's how the name Torsk came about, exactly because it was a fish. I guess her crew were happy that she wasn't named the Anchovy.

BTW, I had my 12- and 10-year-old sons on the trip. The highlight of the Baltimore trip for them was the USS Torsk, although they were disappointed that they didn't see a real periscope in the exhibit.

CH,

Thank you.

I actually lived in Baltimore for a total of 11 years before moving to California about 10 years ago. The visit was very nostalgic for me and my wife. For our sons, both born in Baltimore, it was like visiting a strange city as they were only 2 and 1 when we left.

Superb techno photo. Glad the boys liked the sub, my kids were on one a few years ago, it was hard to get them off it! I was amazed by the living conditions- guys sleeping in the most unlikely operational spaces. The guide explained at great length how the torpedo room worked and the importance of keeping the water on the outside!

Thank you, Pete.

Yeah, the sub was just a giant toy to the boys. I can't imagine cooped up in a sub for months at a time. I would go crazy.
