FrozenInTime Posted March 17, 2015 Share #2 Posted March 17, 2015 Very visceral thing the Vulcan - I don't think anyone who has seen one will ever forget the howl of it's engines as it pulls into a climb.

wda Posted March 23, 2015 Share #5 Posted March 23, 2015 Sadly, only one left flying now and its future is rather precarious. It is a stunning event at air shows when youngsters see it for the first time.

It is a stunning event at air shows when youngsters see it for the first time. I agree with you, Dave : it's a pity! The Vulcan will probably remain the most impressive of my numerous Farnborough recollections. Time goes on... Pierre

tobey bilek Posted March 24, 2015 Share #8 Posted March 24, 2015 All early jets made for bombers & transports smoked the same way and all were equally loud. Fighter jets can`t have a smoke because it gives your position away. The transports are now into newer generation hi bypass engines that smoke much less and are far more quiet. But make no mistake, aircraft is the main polluter of the sky even today. I will never forget when 9/11 happened and they were all grounded for a month or more. The haze disappeared over Chicago in a few days and the sky went to a bright azure blue all the way to the horizon and it stayed that way for 4/6 weeks until they started to fly again. The crud was back within days and we get maybe 2 days of nice sky every year, usually right after a heavy long rain and strong wind. It never lasts. There are on average 4000 commercial AC in the air at any given time. Each burning thousands of gallons of jet fuel. Where do you think all the crud goes including the CO2 which is a normal byproduct of fossile fuel burn, and is largely responsible for much of global warming . pgk Posted March 24, 2015 Share #9 Posted March 24, 2015 The noise and vibration can be felt just by looking at the pictures. When I was very young I went to a school for a short time close to an airbase where Vulcans would come in over the school to land. Even though I was very young I can still remember their roar and silhouette.
Jeff Bird Posted March 25, 2015 Share #10 Posted March 25, 2015 The Vulcan and those who flew in her. Served above and beyond for a lot of years. A great airframe.
Pecole Posted March 25, 2015 Author Share #11 Posted March 25, 2015 The Vulcan and those who flew in her. Served above and beyond for a lot of years. A great airframe. To conclude - or complete - here are two photos of all three "Vee bombers" models : next to the seemingly much loved Avro Vulcan, the much more classical Vickers Valiant and the quite "complicated" Handley-Page Victor. Snapped at Farnborough in 1959. Welcome, dear visitor!
