Hi guys, My name is Jimmy, and I’m currently living in Taipei, Taiwan.

First of all, a little background of myself. I majored in finance when I was in college, but my greatest passion have alway been photography, street photography to be precise, and I plan to keep shooting along with my career in banking.

This is my first time sharing a photography project on this wonderful forum of Leica lovers.

I’m going to call this series the “European” series, and it was from my trip to Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, and Slovkia last summer.

I packed my Leica M6 and M8 with two lens, summicron 35/2 Pre-A and Voigtlander 50/1.5 VM, into my backpack alone with 24 rolls of Portra 400. I usually shoot both film and digital, however about 80% of the photos in the series are film (Kodak Portra 400), and this is also my first attempt to try a street photography series in color because I always think color street photography is really hard to master. But I still gave it a try!

During my trip I spent most of my time looking for interesting characters and interesting moments, and it was an very unique and challenging experience to shoot in a completely new environment everyday, but I enjoy it a lot as it reminds me of uncertainty elements in street photography. Sometime I spend too much time shooting on the same streets in Taipei, and it gets really hard for me to find new inspirations.

I packed 24 rolls of Portra 400 in my bag before I leave, and I used every roll of film during the trip; I wish I have packed more of them!

I usually shot around 15 frames every time I go out, I guess this tell us to alway be a tourist and keep our curiosity to our surroundings.

Some people look for the perfect composition in street photography and some look for perfect light and shadow, the point is everyone is looking for different things on the street, but to me it’s always the people. I’m always looking for interesting people, people with stories, or a happy smiley face.

The overall experience of shooting a street photography project in such a short period of time and different locations is challenging but inspiring. The overall experience is pleasing due to friendly people on the street, interesting cultural elements, and the pure excitement of using a film Leica to compete these things.

I hope you enjoyed the photo so far, and if you want to see the full series, click here.

I believe some of the photos are way better to be seen as a part of a series than a single photo.

Thanks,

Jimmy

congrats for series, nice photos

it will be nice to know location of each photos, since "mittel europa" is very similar in landscape...Austria , Slovakia and hungary share the same style of architecture , landscapes and also the same river (danube)

also it will be nice to ask what was your experience compared to asia about the fear of people for being photographed (in germany i was taking some wide photos in underground and a boy come to ask if he was in the pic and if yes to be deleted)

a part of reply i already know, germans are really crazy about topic of privacy, sure in slovakia and hungary you had more freedom, right?

Hello Jimmy

It is very difficult to explain why, but I must say that your short series here does not convince as much as your flickr series, which shows much more story, decisive moment and humor. IMHO you did not select the 4 Tops, :). In the flickr series I see that you've got the eye for it and indeed it convinces also as color street photography, which is indeed a difficult thing

Hi,

Thanks for the comment!

I have the locations of each photo on flickr, but i will try to include them next time.

I agree with you, I had more freedom on taking photos on the street of Hungary compare to Germany, but most of the people I met in Germany are cool about being photographed if you ask for their permission first. And I think the same rule applies to Asia, I usually either ask them before I take the picture or I will let them know that I took a picture of them, and most of them are ok with it.

This is a terrific and strong set! You obviously know how to follow your heart with a sharp eye.

Welcome to the forum and keep them coming!

Jimmy,

Welcome to the LUF :)

I agree with Ece's comments.

Nice pictures series

I shoot only now with my 2 M7 and I let my 2 digital M cameras in my Billingham bag.

Pictures with film are softer and faithful color and I hate "smooth edges" of digital

Some pictures of my last trip (Kodak Portra 400 and 160 + TX400) here :)
