Ben,

The whole scene is recorded with devastating impact.

I kept looking at it for a while, then noticed the message on the bag, like a final stab in the heart.

This should be required viewing for all those policy wonks.

Ece, this is in SOHO, a very swanky, neo-hip section of just south of Greenwich Village. For at least 10 years, there have been 3-4 regulars that have similar situations. When they occasionally meet on the street, it can be a very touchy affair!

Nothing swanky or neo-hip about this scene. Just a sad soul in a compromising position. The other elements of the composition that have been mentioned (writing on the bag and the portion of the dog) are too subtle for me. Not my cup of tea... But I do love with great admiration nearly all of the street portraits that you so generously share on this forum.

Adam, unfortunately there are many more people in this situation than anyone can count. When I walk through SOHO with all the high end consumer goods and right beside me are junkies and drug addicts/dealers, doing their trade right inside the stores, it's hard not to just show things as they are!

I walk to Chinatown from Houston Street almost every other evening. It's the best exercise for this old body. What I see along the way is reality, not a wish. I have encountered this particular gentlemen well over 100 times. Indeed, I have witnessed events where individuals in wheel chairs are fighting with other wheelchair bound folks.

Truth is he isn't interested in me in any way. All I'm doing is showing things as they are. I don't have any agenda. I'm just showing what is real.

Ben - You are clearly entitled to share whatever photo you wish. I'm not at all suggesting that you shouldn't.

To be honest, ever since I got put in a head lock by a (current) street resident named Joe, who thought I was trying to take a photo of him and his wife even though I was only viewing the images on my camera while walking past them, I have formed a very firm view on this subject that will dictate my own approach.

Joe and his wife, Nicole, can be found mostly on Madison and 57th. When I encountered them, Nicole had a black eye and was bleeding from the nose. Joe has a big anger problem. I was bent out of shape that a guy about half my size had gotten away with putting me in a head-lock and throwing my eye-glasses on the concrete. There's no way that I am going to have a throw down with a sad soul like this in broad daylight.

After I finally got loose from Joe, I walked away thinking that Joe (whose name I didn't yet know) had some serious issues and was lucky that I didn't also have a screw loose. But then Nicole caught up with me and told me their story: that Joe was a 4 year Afghanistan war veteran who was "home" for a short while b/c he and Nicole had lost their home - and baby - in hurricane Sandy. Nicole, is a licensed cosmetologist, but has fallen so far off of the deep end that there is a real possibility that she and Joe might never get back on their feet.

To put salt in the wound, Joe and Nicole, sadly, have not been successful at getting any meaningful assistance from the various Veteran's associations.

After learning this background, the thought of taking an unsolicited picture of Joe and Nicole made me sick to my stomach. Having said this, if I had an opportunity to take a "Ben Lieberman"-quality portrait of them - essentially taking them for a moment out of their current extremely unfortunate circumstance and smothering them with some of that wonderful bokeh that you produce - I would most certainly jump at the chance.

Reality hurts and we don't want to deal with it. On this forum and others, from time to time some people post images of the homeless, and sometimes even go so far as to suggest that the homeless enjoy the (photographer's) company while their pictures are being taken (with all the expensive equipment the photographer is carrying around).

I enjoy seeing Ben's incomparable street portraits of smiling individuals. These images always manage to generate a huge impact.

However this current image is different; it operates at a totally different level.

A stellar image, in my view, should tell a deep story, with a punch in the gut. This image, for me, fulfills all that and more. The message of the image is what we choose to get out of it. And this particular image speaks volumes, if only we can hear, including the message on the bag.

Ben, this is probably one of the strongest, high impact images I've seen from you. You are an amazing inspiration.

Hi Ben and all of you,

Among my patients, I also have many homeless. They arrive always at the final stage for treatment.Sometimes it's too late cirrhosis, cancer, hypothermia (when very cold) , extreme undernutrition ....

The world is cruel and will not change for years to come , with unemployment and the gap between the very rich , who does not like to share (some do) and the very poor

It is sad.The problem is global !

Best

Henry
