John,
Thanks. Maybe Dan got an acceptable shot of the whole engine, but I doubt it. Light was sheer crap and it's preserved in a bad position. 8 AM with some decent cloud cover might do it.I'd hate to be anywhere near this rig if it were operating. Never seen such a huge loco before! http://www.nps.gov/stea/planyourvisit/upload/up4012.pdf

William,
You're right, steam locos are expressions of raw power much more than they are 'romantic'. This makes them fascinating in my perception; they do not hide the enormous amount of power unleashed (and hopefully controlled) by large machines. Best, Norbert |

I am drawn to this image almost because of the slight haze, William. You set the shot well.
respectfully, thomas w.

Well..., obviously this "salvage job" did not have "universal appeal"!
Norbert, Agreed. Please post some more of your steam shots. I miss them from the last Forum. Thomas, There was some ugly stuff just to the right of this engine. As a matter of interest, you can see how accurate the 50mm frame is on our M5's. The cab is just barely included on the right, which was my intention, and this is full-frame.

William,
Thanks, during summer I took some shots of one of my favourite steam locos over here - using the Hassi though, which requires some extra justification to post them in this forum. So take a quick look, it'll depart in a few seconds: 2006_09_14_04_Forum.jpg Next year I'm going to substitute my laptop for a large screw-wrench every now and then, and help a group of people run this marvel (see Dampflok-Tradition Oberhausen eV - it's the 41 360, a Mikado). I promise I'll always take a camera with me .... Norbert |

Nice shot Norbert, the use of DOF is excellent IMHO. It does illustrate the technical weaknesses that William was battling with.

I like your shot William, I think all of the contrasts and lines and angles convey the sheer 'mechanics' , for lack of a better term, of the subject.
