John Z. Goriup Posted July 26, 2014 Share #1 Posted July 26, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Drove to southern California last weekend to attend the Dana Point Concours d'Elegance and resolved to use every one of my lenses to get a clearer and more comprehensive idea of the perspective, sharpness, color rendition, image quality and general characteristics / applicability of each of my M optics for automotive photograph, my favorite subject after landscapes. This is a Porsche 356 Club event, and therefore is not nearly as crowded nor as hectic and formal as some of the world-class big-name shows, consequently I was able to find the optimum position for every subject & shot. Since all my lenses are 6-bitted I was able to go back and see which lens I had used during post-processing. One of the things I confirmed is that the 35mm focal length on a full frame is the ideal lens for this kind of photography. Reviewing all my M9P photos, I find that about 75% of all my automotive shots are with the 35mm Summicron. One of the reasons for this whole seemingly pointless exercise is that I am thinking of buying a new 35mm Summilux f1.4 Asph. FLE lens to match the respective capabilities of the 50 Cron & Lux lenses, which I like to use when there is enough space to use them effectively. I also wanted to ascertain which, if any, segment of my current lens selection' performance envelope is in need of some bolstering and improvement. After this highly informal and admittedly amateurish experiment I have come to the inevitable & predictable conclusion that I need to practice more and work smarter to become a better automotive photographer and that the lens portion of my kit is completely satisfactory and adequate, considering my current needs and skill level. pauledell Posted July 26, 2014 Share #2 Posted July 26, 2014 Quite an array of pictures you have here. It looks like you already have sufficient lens for the job at hand from looking at the results posted here. Paul
stuny Posted July 26, 2014 Share #3 Posted July 26, 2014 Excellent, and as icing on the cake you lead with a 904, one of my favorite cars. The first one I ever saw was in the window of Air Cooled Motors in South orange, NJ, just back fro a class win at Sebring, driven by Briggs Cunningham and Air Cooled's owner, lake underwood. You also caught some amazingly lovely 356s. The 35 is probably the perfect lens for this type of event - wide enough that you can get close, eliminating other viewers, but not so wide as to distort the image.
