Default Make Way!

A 'Brockenlok' heading out of Wernigerode towards Drei Annen Hohne and The Brocken in October 2004. This is where the line crosses a 4-way, multi-lane road junction on the skew... These locos weigh 70 tons each, so road traffic doesn't argue!

Digilux-2 at 100ASA.

Fabulous capture of the engine and smoking stack!

I was just noticing the trees, as though this were taken in springtime, or maybe autumn...is that correct?

Thanks for sharing these great train photos John D.!

Hi Allan

The shot was taken in October 2004 - we were very lucky with the weather.

There is still a surprising amount of narrow-gauge steam in Germany if you know where to look. The Harz system (which includes the Selketelbahn) is quite extensive and it still runs a lot of scheduled passenger trains with steam.

Despite competition from road services, the system is actually expanding - a section of closed standard-gauge line between Gernrode and Quedlinburg has been converted to metre-gauge and is due to re-open about now. It has also established through running with the metre-gauge Nordhausen tram system - so one sees dual-power (overhead electric and diesel electric) city trams miles away from their home system.

Hey John, that is an awsome shot. I wish I was right beside you capturing that photo.
