A 'Brockenlok' heading out of Wernigerode towards Drei Annen Hohne and The Brocken in October 2004. This is where the line crosses a 4-way, multi-lane road junction on the skew... These locos weigh 70 tons each, so road traffic doesn't argue!
Digilux-2 at 100ASA.

Fabulous capture of the engine and smoking stack!
I was just noticing the trees, as though this were taken in springtime, or maybe autumn...is that correct? Thanks for sharing these great train photos John D.! Allan |

Hi Allan
The shot was taken in October 2004 - we were very lucky with the weather. There is still a surprising amount of narrow-gauge steam in Germany if you know where to look. The Harz system (which includes the Selketelbahn) is quite extensive and it still runs a lot of scheduled passenger trains with steam. Despite competition from road services, the system is actually expanding - a section of closed standard-gauge line between Gernrode and Quedlinburg has been converted to metre-gauge and is due to re-open about now. It has also established through running with the metre-gauge Nordhausen tram system - so one sees dual-power (overhead electric and diesel electric) city trams miles away from their home system.
