Default Another Real Locomotive

This is specially for Norbert Steinkamp

Ffestiniog Railway double Fairlie locomotive 'David Lloyd George' (2' gauge 0-4-4-0T, built at the FR's Boston Lodge Works in 1992) awaiting departure from Harbour Station, Porthmadog on 19 July.

And I can smell the salt air along The Cob! Was this really built so recently or should you have said "rebuilt"? They do some wonderful engineering it Boston Lodge- do you have any shots from inside there?

Cheers,

Pete.

Hi Pete

Yes, I really meant 1992 and even building it ourselves it still cost about £350,000. We've also built a single-ended version (Taliesin - an 0-4-4T) since then. 'Tal' went into service in 1998. When there is time between all of the work that Boston Lodge is doing building carriages and renovating Garratts for the Welsh Highland project (not to mention maintaining the existing fleet) we are also building a Lynton & Barnstaple style Manning Wardle 2-6-2T for a private customer - that is likely to stay on the Welsh Highland when it's finished, for use on light out-of-season trains.

Boston Lodge has built steam locomotives since the 1870s and we still have the earliest (Merrddin Emrys - 1879). 'ME' has just returned to service after a heavy overhaul that included a new pair of power bogies built at Boston Lodge.

I'll try to dig out some shots of work at Boston Lodge.

Regards

John
