Well that's what I've been hoping for... a modern version that will make it to the US, and pass all requirements, etc. Unless they screw it up and destroy the lineage, I will be in line to buy one. Let's just hope they build it.

So I'm gathering you worked for Land Rover (or still do?) in design or engineering?

I'd love to hear that story sometime. Must've been a very cool job.

William - I am impressed by the handling for sure. You drive it in a similar fashion to the Morgan...and it's clear you know the vehicle, and how to drive. Defender's have always been a dream vehicle for me....makes no sense, but I like the scarcity factor.

No, I just try to shift them. Before BMW and Ford, in the days of British Aerospace ownership, communication between the trenches and the company was extremely good. Since I sold the most in those days, they wanted to know what I thought would sell. Land Rover in the U.K. is still like that to a degree, but Ford seem to work in a vacuum, which probably has a lot to do with their current situation.

While I still know the design team, we can only chat now over dinner when I can get over to pay them a visit. No more telephones and e-mail. A civilian replacement for Defender can carry over only so many visual cues from the original. I'll explain when we can chat. Can't judge how you'll receive it. The project is on hold until the USD strengthens anyway. They don't need it. WE do! Break even point worldwide is probably 30,000 units annually. That's a lot for a specialized vehicle. And currently, Europe does not suffer from CARB or Ralph Nader.

Well, at least you knew I have no death wish! Agreed, here they are a toy unless you live someplace cool like Aspen, Ouray or Santa Fe. I have a client who has a plant in Montrose and who keeps one near Telluride. That one gets used properly and is no worse for it. We took it over Imogene Pass together in 1998 and he didn't screw up. Well, i love the good old ones, but a ride in an "autofocus" last year with William made clear, that they are VERY serious 4-wheelers off road.
