Default Photo Essay Part1

This is the first 10 of 25 images that David Turnley edited from hundreds of images I took during my week's time in his Workshop to form a photo essay.

Here is the web address for anyone wanting to learn more about David's workshops in NYC and around the world: David C. Turnley | Workshops

My thoughts & feelings about the workshop can be found after the the images.

My comments re: David Turnley Photography Workshop

I had the distinct pleasure of attending one of David’s photography workshops from August 10 – 17. The most important impression is of the man himself and the impact he makes on the participants. David’s humanity, empathic sensibilities, artistic eye and Midwestern directness all serve to ensure a rich, meaningful experience. He is a very direct, accessible talent that embraces each participant and ensures that it’s safe to explore new ground while being cheered on by his disarming grace and the supportive nest of the other participants. David helped me to make images I was unable to make before.

David is focused, intense and goal directed, yet he’s always aware of the participant’s concerns and moods. He commands his razor sharp awareness and sensibilities to drive the workshop’s participants to plow new ground and take on challenges seemingly beyond their current awareness and skills. He empowers the voyagers in his ship to stretch their vision, think in different ways and become more aware of both their own aesthetic and others. I was struck by the fact that everyone in the group came to trust him so quickly. He has an uncannily set of assessment skills that no doubt have served to both ensure his survivability in war zones around the globe and to be act as the kind of mentor that made being a participant so meaningful and rich. I’m truly grateful for having this opportunity and would suggest to any and all that wish to enrich themselves and the expression of their experiences through photography, that this is a wonderful environment to do so.

Ben -

So far I've just looked at part 1. All the images are excellent, but the first two are not quite up to the level of the rest. The course description is fascinating and tempting. Did you know him from the neighborhood?

Very nice work, Ben. You always have great people shots! Incidentally, are David Turnley and Peter Turnley the same person? Do you know?

welcome to peterturnley.com

They both graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in French Literature. If it's the same person, why would he use two different names? What's going on here??????

They are identical twins. I have been in the room wih both of them at the same time. As a psychologist, it's the most fascinating thing to observe & study. BTW, Mc Lellan Street is a book they completed as teenagers together in Ft Wayne, Indiania. It was at the NYC Leica gallery this past winter. Incredible work for teenagers.

Nice shots. I can vouch for David as a fascinating photographer and great to work with. I spent a week in his Rome workshop (followed it up with a one-on-one session in NY) and it is really amazing to see how he can get incredibly close to individuals without getting any reaction change. His presence is almost unnoticeable and it is such an experience to see him in action,

A side comment on fringe benefits: Under normal circumstances, I would have been arrested in NY for the close-up photography I did under him but because he was there to guide, I ended up with four phone numbers instead

Best wishes,
Arif
