sweetly rendered & marvelously rendered
your use of multiple tonalities is very cunning and quite effective at first I thought you may have included too much street, but the bit of a figure and the store front to the right set the stage perfectly, leading the viewer to the Village Cigar store a favorite of mine (as well as yours) ...the tree branch to the upper left completes the frame Bravo for this glorious photograph, Ben! |

What a fabulous creation of an everyday scene... you should give this technique a a name!
I believe we already have Rolotone. Would like to see a more subtle grey border and thinner keyline. Congratulations in seeing the potential in this shot.

Doc, thanks for being on the same wavelength. When you come back East, hit me! My wife & I were strolling along at dusk a couple of weeks ago when we walked by the old Village Gate. For anyone in NYC that loves music, the closing of this hallowed hall, home to everyone from Bob Dylan to Thelonius Monk was a BLACK day. It has reopened and been entirely updated and has a new name; Le Poisson Rouge.
Lo & Behold, Ricki Lee Jones was performing, ending a 3 night stand. Waked in off the street, sat down & had our minds blown. I hadn't seen her in years. A devil with an angel's voice. She was astounding. Was best when solo on piano & guitar. Brought the house down & people to their feet time & time again. A true American treasure. Anyway,if you have ever seen her, you know she likes to talk as much as sing & she went on & on about Sheridan Square, Christopher Street, Seventh Ave, all back in the late 70's when Seventh Ave South was the hottest jazz club in the Universe. My old apartment was across the street On Leroy St and we spent most nights with the Brecker Brothers till early morning jamming & burning. I took my R8 film camera out the next night, searching for a way to express how SHE made me feel about this very special place where people from the fringe have cobbled together a way to live & love together. I hoped to capture some of the hallucinogenic lyrics she wrote in Coolsville, which she said was inspired by time on those streets & on that corner. Amado, William, Brett & Stu thanks for your kind words. It's a wonderful thing to try and find a new voice inside and put it out for feedback in such a supportive environment. I'm struggling & tripping. |

Ben
saw this after reading your short narrative.....it is an amazing effort and I am sure you feel you accomplished what you set out to do. I do not know the area at all so your insight was very helpful. for me this is Art. Chapeau Andy

Stand Ricky Lee Jones next to that no left turn sign and you have an album cover. I'm not often fond of extreme manipulations, but this one really works. Great job!

The combination of the fabulus photography and the place is very powerful for me Ben. I spent 3 years playing music in that neighborhood full time in the early 70's. Someday I'd love to join with you outside of Village Cigars and see what we can see! Sorry I missed the get together at Grand Central, had to go out of town. best....Peter
