Azzo,
John was alluding to the concrete block in the background which would have looked not out of place in some far outpost of the USSR. These blocks were erected in place of small terraced back-to back slum dwellings. Within two years the area had become a dreadful place (not that anyone with a choice would have gone to live there). Towards the end, the tenants were rehoused and some of the less-awful blocks were used as student flats for the nearby Uni. Then they were torn down and replaced by streets of two-storey houses with small gardens.

When I shot this series, as a project for the local newspaper, I hardly remember seeing an adult anywhere, just a few gangs of kids who demanded to be photographed.
