Ariel is so sweet and open that even though I ususally dont like tattoos and piercings, she manages to overcome them for me. In a shop in the East Village.

It is a happy, bright and appealing portrait, Stuart. Just for discussion, do you think that the photo is more or less interesting and appealing due to her body art?

Ink and piercings are quite common of course. I guess that you can consider them features to be minimised or emphasised depending on your style and preferences too. Generally someone with a quite significant piece of body art like that is very proud to show it off to the world and attitudes like that can mean for good drama and impact in your photos.

Personally I enjoy working with models with a little edgier style like that. Old school 'Pretty' is easy. More models than not from those I've worked with have at least some if not quite significant modifications!

I can see how that might appeal, but her tatoo's are not particularly good or artistic and it just looks all wrong, more-so, given her young age.

Robert, Ali, David, Fred & Tom - Thank you.

Geoff - The tats are definitely a part of her persona. I suspect the sees herself as a creative, free spirit, expressing herself unusually and rather effectively with her clothing, jewelry, tats, headwear, footwear (the first time I saw her she wore ordinary shoes she had converted into a part of her whole for the day) and '70s style peace and love personality. I am still no fan of tats or piercings but as I mentioned in post 1, she is so sweet and open that it overcomes my preferences/biases.

Ali, I enjoy working with models, amateur and professional, who do have body art and it's quite common. I don't want to hijack Stuart's thread though.

Stuart's photo is about portraying her personality and I think that he has done a great job there. I was attempting to separate our personal preferences/opinions from that portrayal.

Many character portraits may not show people with features we like or don't like of course, while still being well made and interesting portraits. In a different environment those preferences might be discussed differently. For example in an Ink magazine for certain the type and quality of the body art would be the focus of comment.

Geoff,

I agree, her personality shines through, in Stuarts well caught photo, but my head cannot separate the obvious youthfulness of the girl and what her personal circumstances may be like for her to cover her body in 'art'.

.... irrespective, it is a great portrait and i am sure she would be over the moon with it if she were to see it.

Ali -

Thank you. As soon as I got back to the office I processed it and emailed it to her. Within a minute I received a short, nice thank you note with extra exclamation points in it.

Stuart - I also, if possible send a copy through to the person and it is warming to receive a note of thanks in return. I have found it also helps sway a decision if the subject is not quite sure about whether they wish to be photographed, if you offer to send it through.

Really glad she was pleased with it.

She is a very attractive young lady but like you Stuart I am not a fan of tats or piercings. I guess my age is showing. I think there are better ways to show ones individuality than something so permanent. You captured her very well.

Oh wow, is she really 18 and old enough to have the tattoos?

She's beautiful but I can't help thinking that part of the impact is the irony of a sweet young girl with 'hell or glory' embossed on her chest and as the irony fades, she'll come to regret it.

One of the things about fashion is that it is impermanent. To change yourself permanently to adapt to a current fashion will almost certainly leave a bitter legacy.

Hopefully in the future she'll find that they have ways of getting things like that off, without the pain and cost of what would be involved today.

Stuart,

a very good portrait and the hell of a discussion is already being started and can be continued. She seems to be happy about her decision and that is what matters. The problems all being mentioned are more or less the problems of the viewer and probably not the girl's. We don't know to tell the future and that is good. This is a very appealing picture under many aspects. Well done!

Iduna,

But that is the point. She is so young and the tatoos are so permanant, one cannot wonder whether she fully understood what she was doing.... i'm showing my age too :D

Maybe the thread says more about the demographics of Forum Members than the qualities of the photo.

I do have opinions on tattoos and piercings (I'm a father of a 20 yr old) but I keep those separate from photo discussions.

I think that the portrait has more impact because of her tattoos and piercings, yes, that is really the point of it.

From my perspective the discussion reminds me of a fashion or art nude photo where the comments can include 'Oh she needs a feed' or something. Those things are not meant to be the point of those photos or they are remarks/opinions on the person more than the photo.

I apologise if that sounds harsh or unfair to others.

I work with a lot of models ;-)
