Here in the Philippines many homes use to use a hand pump for getting fresh water. Here is an example of a young mother priming her pump,

and we complain about our water!

My house in England had water from only a similar metal hand pump until the mid 1970's. We have mains water now. I am trying to restore the old pump but not being an engineer it is a challenge. One doesn't realise just how recently some rural parts of the country have got "running water". They still have not managed to get mains drainage to us so everything goes into the tank for later pumping. At least we only pay for water coming in - my daughter is on mains water and they charge per liter then assume it all goes down the drain so charge for carting it away again!

Good story Richard, I remember living in Annapolis I had a well with a hand pump and can recall how cool and refreshing the underground good water tasted without fluoride added.

Thanks

Hank:)
