eddds Posted July 10, 2014 Share #2 Posted July 10, 2014 Fantastic set, especially #4 Regards, Edgard
stuny Posted July 10, 2014 Share #3 Posted July 10, 2014 Adam - Your flashes are getting much more natural looking, with the exception of #3, but that one is due to the close background. Nicely done.
Louis Posted July 10, 2014 Share #4 Posted July 10, 2014 A superb set as always. My fave are number 1 and 4!... Adam, I hope you are not getting too lazy when your MM is making this wonderful job of "conversion"!
A miller Posted July 10, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted July 10, 2014 (edited) Many thanks, Edgard, Stuart and Louis. Really appreciate your comments. Louis - very funny. Not sure what you mean by "conversion;" there's plenty of processing needed with these RAW files, and decision points along the way that make me crazy, although i suppose i should be appreciative of the flexibility that the MM affords. In terms of shooting style, this is actually the polar opposite of lazy. But it's thrilling and i could do it all day and night! Thanks again and all the best! sblitz Posted July 10, 2014 Share #8 Posted July 10, 2014 Hope you are using a long lens -- some of those looks suggest the next picture might've been more interesting Nice work as usual, need to get and use my flash as well........have you tried rigging up an orange filter on the flash. My understanding is that you get what you want as a fill without endangering yourself by setting off a stampede heading towards the cameraman
A miller Posted July 10, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted July 10, 2014 Many thanks, Steve, very nice of you to stop by and offer the suggestion of an orange filter for the FLASH. Thats a new one for me, but im very open minded and will look into this. Please do look me up the next time you're up for shooting with flash in the downtown area. Mornings are great for this and i have some nooks and crannies to share with you And welcome back and hope you trip to Italy was as enjoyable as your photos depict. roguewave Posted July 10, 2014 Share #10 Posted July 10, 2014 Adam, your fearless endeavors are commendable. Do you feel any connection / empathy for the chosen you catalogue? I ask because clearly, you have a great eye. What do you think the flash brings into the process? The hyperkinetic mania that pulses through the frames are arresting, indeed. Please don't take this the wrong way. I'm just trying to sort out what it is that you are trying to communicate. I look forward to seeing more of your street work. All the best. A miller Posted July 10, 2014 Author Share #11 Posted July 10, 2014 (edited) Hi Ben - sincere thanks for stopping by and a fair question you have posed. I have by no means permanently affixed this God-foresaken flash to my camera, and really only spend a small part of my shooting time using it. It is, though, a style that I would likke to explore, develop and see where it takes me. This wouldn't be the case if I lived in Kansas. But I am lucky to live and work in NYC and have an interest in exploring all aspects of street photography here. You're spot on with regard to what the flash has the potential of giving me in the street. The "hyperkinetic energy pulse" that hones in on a compelling emotion or expression of a person adds a certain zing to an image that appeals to me. I figure that, at the rate I going, if I can come up with a dozen or two highlight shots by the end of the year or so, it could make an interesting portfolio. In any case, wasn't it you who told me very recently to get closer to people and "see what happens"?! On a totally separate subject, some people on a thread in the Lens forum need your help regarding the sharpness of the 80mm lux. I have just given you a plug there.... epand56 Posted July 11, 2014 Share #12 Posted July 11, 2014 I personally love very much #3 because it really has something special that I do not find in the other pictures. I mean that the expression of the young man, his clear eyes, the shutter behind him, the background darkening are all elements that attract my attention and tell me a story. This do not happen in the other 5 pictures. What I see there is the reaction I would expect from people I would shoot a flash on the face to. Ok, in #4 we have a very good looking girl, but that's it. I'm not at at all saying they are not nice pictures, but they lack someway of an interesting "story". It's just people got on a flash. While #3 really has some interesting "stories" behind. This is just to say that street photography, an activity I'm not at all good at, is not all that simple.
tundraline Posted July 11, 2014 Share #13 Posted July 11, 2014 Hi Adam: Very interesting and good photos. Looks like the flash thing is getting better and better. I like photo numbers 1 and 3, and the last photo, best. Best, Tom

wilfredo Posted July 18, 2014 Share #16 Posted July 18, 2014 Interesting use of the flash. You've captured the frantic pace of this restless city, so much so that these images disturb me. I avoid crowds as much as possible but this is not always possible in NYC. The energy you've captured is what I seek to avoid. They are powerful images of fast moving Zombified residents!
