The Kite Maker

Pico, he makes handmade superlative kites that he sells at Union Square.

Bless him. Kite making is a beautiful melding of art and nature, and is not intuitive.

My Great Uncle, Domina Jalbert, built wind powered lifting devices his entire life, working intuitively, making thousands of models until late in life, he invented the Jalbert Parafoil. He is one of my Heroes.

Nice photo. Pico. A wonderful tale. Thanks both for sharing

Of course I did not make that picture. Uncle Domina was a familiar family figure. To this day I regret having been drafted at the same time I could have become his apprentice.

Ben,

I wish I could also see his creations. I wish I could meet him, get to know him. This face, this expression, this beautifully created portrait makes me want to know more about him. One of your best (I know this is a tired old cliché by now, do forgive)!

Ben -

Kite flying is a huge tradition in India on the day of Makar Sakranti - a mid-winter Hindu festival celebrated in India and parts of Nepal. It marks the transition of the sun from Sagittarius to Capricorn during the winter solstice, and is celebrated by kite-flying (Uttarayan). The transition period is not considered auspicious, and many people hold signing of agreements and contracts till after the celebration of this day, invariably falling on January 14-15......!

As always, you capture the soul of the subject, and display it for all to see!!
