This is really good. Very pleasing, and not typical. It's great the way the lights, the trees, walkway, landed birds and fisherman all take you along the same diagonal. And then the water runs counter going into the land. Great!

I almost wonder if the flying bird is a bit of distraction, if I'd like it better with out, but love it as is.

Stephanie, Hans, Mitchell, Thank you for taking the time to comment, it does mean a lot to me. This was one of my first shots with a new camera and lens and I was very pleased with the results and amazed with the detail when I could see the fishing rod and reel at 100%.

Victor, Thanks. You also noticed that my new hobby has grown on me, at first I thought the noctilux was going to be a challange to use but after looking a some of the shots with it posted here and my penchant for available light I had to do it and am glad I did, so far it is not all that difficult to use and I love it.

Nice shot. You're making me reminisce. I used to fish that stretch of the coast extensively a number of years ago. I fished the sand bar that juts out from that beach many times at or near low tide, and have caught a number of stripers there.

I miss East coast fishing quite a bit. Southern California is great in many ways, but the in-shore fishing back East is superior IMO. Sorry for the tangent. This is quite a nice photograph, and captures the mood of the day very well.

Great image. I agree that it should be kept as it is to preserve the atmosphere of fog. The seagull on the upper right really balances the composition.

This is a wonderful and accurate portrayal of the foggy weather there. (I am familiar with this beach)
I agree with John Kuo regarding the seagull. Perfect. That really makes the picture work.

Superb timing also in regards to the body position of the fisherman and the position of the bird.

P.S. As I was writing this I couldn't resist seeing what it would look like with a little bit more contrast. I opened it in photoshop and applied unsharp mask @

I think this punches it up a small amount yet preserves the foggy mood. What do you think?

In any case, the photo is wonderful. It has a very "old" appearance. It looks as if it could have been taken in the 1930s.

Not bad.. not bad at all..the only thing I would have done here would be to walk to the next point...to eliminate the 2 points of land to only one..the one with the fisherman.

That would have achieve 2 things, getting closer to my subject of interest and getting that extra piece of land jutting out...out of the way so that only one finger of land points to the fisherman as the subject of interest.

I know I am sounding hyper-critical today, but I think , when shooting people especially you really need to try to work out the compositional elements in your minds eye first and keep shooting until the image "makes sense " visually..I know in many occasions we have to make snap decisions and don't have the luxury of time.

Anthony, Thank you, that view is across the channel on the Fairfield side to St. Mary's by the Sea. I had my M8 and lenses shipped to my brother who lives about a couple hundred yards from where I took it. I flew over to visit and get the camera.

John, thanks for your comments and suggestion. Let me describe the situation of this shot: I was sitting on the lowest boulder closest to the water on the breakwater along the boat channel. One step or slip to my left would have put me over my head in the water attempting to swim with the M8 and noctilux. Any other angle along the breakwater would have been at the compostional expense of the string of lights and trees disappearing into the mist.
