While watching a documentary with my Eight Grader about the U.S. space program I was distressed that she knew nothing of the International Space Station.
Time for some Father/Daughter quality time at the A&S Museum: Her generation takes space travel more or less for granted. Challenger disaster, long before she was born. Very impressed by the size of the shuttle. M8 CV 28mm Ultron ISO640 1/30 sec shuttle.jpg We had time to talk in depth about the Viet Nam war. M8 CV 28mm Ultron ISO640 1/8sec huey.jpg We talked about A-Bomb, nuclear proliferation and the Cold War that resulted. M8 CV 28mm Ultron ISO640 1/25 sec enolagay.jpg We talked about espionage M8 CV 28mm Ultron ISO640 1/30 sec sr71.jpg We talked about the impact of the commercial aircraft industry on the economy of the U.S. and its precipitous decline M8 CV 28mm Ultron ISO640 1/60 sec panamclipper.jpg She actually appeared to be thinking! Henry -
Admit it, you wanted to go to the A&S Museum. Superb series, all well composed, detailed with excellent light and color (the SR71 is one of my favorite a/c ever -- Perhaps I'll tell you some time of when one landed at our airbase, unexpectedly due to mechanical problems). The shot of your 8th grader is adorable. |

Great set of pictures and so much aviation history in one place.

Big - This is at one of the many Smithsonian Institute museum buildings on the mall between the Capital and the Washington Monument, definitely worth visiting. There is a second museum, less accessible, at Dulles Interenational Airport in nearly nearby Virginia, should you wish to visit.

Ben, Stuart, and Louis, thanks so much for enjoying these. As you so astutely surmised, Stuart, this was just as much for me as for her (this is actually the Dulles hanger).
Pete, that's so kind of you to say so. I was actually somewhat reluctant to post these because there have been so many great representations of this museum here on the site, but not for quite some time. At any rate, coming from you, a great compliment. Thanks! Cheers all, Henry |
