Default A difficult skill (Appleby Fair)

This looked better I think with a slight sepia tint...in a B&W conversion I found detail in the horse lost, best I could do. Thanks

An excellent shot. But I wonder how you got this effect. The horseman looks so detached, lower contrast, different sharpness, from the rest of the image.

I believe it is a matter of the light being brightly overcast and from high and behind the rider, rimming his head and shoulder, which created the effect.

Jaap...Well spotted and I agree it does look different....i so wish I could say I did it intentionally, and then proceed to divulge my master technique.....but alas..... I feel that Stuart has the heads up on this one.( As usual) What has bothered me is how everything is sharp but the riders face...but I think that it was being thrown arround faster than the movement of the horse....I know he was very relieved not to fall off, by the expletives he used when he got out of the water!!

He actually made it harder on himself and the horse than he should have. Notice how tight he has the reins in #1? In situations like this (and another is when the horse is making its way up or down steep a grade) is to ease the reins so that the horse can better find its footing.

I was standing next to a lady who was obviously getting very upset about the way these guys were handling their horses with over-tight reins (means nothing to me); she complained to the RSPCA folks very loudly. Last year a horse broke a leg and drowned in the river during the fair. The rocks of the river bed seem quite large in places.

Good photos DES, quite a show, was it not?
