Martin, interesting. I think your image would translate well in B&W. To me the subject matter feels older in B&W. The cemetery is between 2 townhouses. The Portuguese Jews in NY were often shipwrights and had a vital role in the maritime industry that dominated NYC in the early 19th century. The very wealthy in this congregation went on to build many of the most important and beautiful temples in all of Manhattan.

Ben,
The one in colors was just a document, taken with a pocket camera (olympus xa, a thousand excuses). The followings were made by my Leica M4-P and a Summicron 35 on B&W film. I've just scanned it yet for you. Sorry for my bad english, i'm a french spoken man. Martin. |

Martin, thanks for the images. Very interesting & well executed. I get a completely different vibe from your captures Your command of the language is very good and expressive. Is there a different ethnic/religous group that inhabits the ghetto now?
Doc, the cemetery is only about 100' wide and maybe 60' deep. Only a few souls remain at rest here. It very representative of my neighborhood.. It is often a juxtoposition of opposites, embedded within the original "town" of old NY.
