This was taken with my D2 set on B&W jpeg - it was a test to see how the camera performed against film (not so good). Far too much noise in underexposed areas even at 100 ISO - shutter speed was 1/1250 sec.
At the time I did not have software able to process RAW files and was adjusting the camera to suit my style and subject using just jpeg. This was later processed with Elements 3 and given a duotone using the patches from The Hidden Power of Photoshop Elements. I took three shots of this late November morning, there were just over three seconds between each shot - this one was the second. I only noticed the sky when I opened the file on my computer. Beneath the face I spotted what seems to be three sitting figures with hands placed like that old icon 'See no evil, Speak no evil, Hear no evil.' There were remnants of the face and figures in the third shot. It was this bit of serendipity that started me looking closer at files for recognisable shapes. Osscat |

Osscat,
Large bushy eyebrows, nose, wide grin, large whitish teeth and a protruding chin ...... Is that in anyway enhanced in photoshop...especially the eyes and teeth ? Azzo ps I see the 3 monkeys too, right under the chin and towards the left as we view it ![]() btw Apart from all this....It's a lovely shot. Last edited by azzo : 12/03/07 at 02:23 PM. |

Osscat, nice rendering. You are correct. That is not the way to use this camera. You must shoot in RAW & then spend some time processing it in Camera Raw or similar tool. I use my D2 all the time at iso 100. It is day & night when you have the RAW data to play with before Photoshop. I wouldn't think to ever use this device without shooting RAW. Otherwise it's just a lazy man's point & shoot. Ben

Only pp is levels and contrast - not much to play with in jpeg B&W mode on the D2 - I was exposing for the sky because I wanted the silhouetted foreground, hence 1/1250 sec. f5.6 is the sweet spot for this lens and I almost invariably used it and ISO 100.
I did not see the faces when I took the shot - I was playing with the new toy (it was a replacement) and concentrating on other things. At the time I had no RAW processor so just used jpeg. Had I used RAW with the 6 second write time on the D2, I may probably have missed this cloud formation. I have the original file on disk somewhere under a stack of stuff - I will dig it out if necessary but I can assure you the faces in the sky were there in the original. (there is a rather benign one in the top right corner too) Elements is OK and the additional lift with the Hidden Power disk gives one curves etc but the B&W files off the D2 are not that brilliant if you expose the way I did. I have yet to see if there is anything extra I can do with CS2. osscat |
