Interesting, never seen anything like that in the UK. It looks positively ancient and I would imagine it was for the depositing of what used to be quaintly called 'nuisances'.
They way you have captured it, it almost looks fused into the wall. Well done. LouisB

Thankyou both. Keith...As far as I know, it's the only one and I only came across it very recently. For some reason, this is telling me ' British Period ', and that's the only reason for me having asked the question. HOPE that No Offense was taken !
