Wow, that is an awesome first picture to start off this thread. Ferrari, X1, good company. Let me guess: You were inside the car and you took the photo through the rear window? I have seen countless photos of Ferrari engines before, but they were all still photographs. It looks as if this engine is running and I am quiet surprised to see the smoke coming up. What is this about?

 

Today was my first day photographing too. I was just trying to learn the technicalities of the camera and so I went across the street and took photos of Fort Tryon Park (yes, this park is in Manhattan, NYC). I mean really, how many more photographs of flowers do we really need? With that said, I took these photos purely as a way to grasp the mechanics of the camera. For instance, I love the bokeh in the first flower photo. From a technical standpoint, I do like how the X1 takes nature photography. Let me ask this question though; does the X1 artificially boost the greens? My eyebrow raised a bit when I saw some of these photos. I used DNG JPG S FINE files with the standard color setting. I used Aperture to PP the images but very little processing was done. Pretty pictures but not too accurate.

I like the shot too. David, it looks like cloud reflection to me (with good placement). Ferrari is my dream car! Good technical test results David! Looking forward to more of your shots and hope you are enjoying the camera.

Doh! You are right, Edward, those are cloud reflections. Thanks for the correction. I was worried that someone had blown up a Ferrari engine. I zipped my lips though.

The Ferarri photo is of the engine through the rear window from outside the car. The model is probably either the 360 or the 430.

David - Thanks for this thread. Great idea. I love the X1, it's my "Snapshot" camera (hehe, but so much more) that I take everywhere. Here are some examples:

 

Leica X1 - ISO100 - f/4.0 - 1/500

 

Leica X1 - ISO1600 - f/2.8 - 1/30

 

Leica X1 - ISO200 - f/5.6 - 1/400

I have noticed that this thread has moved over to the Photo Forum and I am a bit disappointed by it. I bookmarked the Leica X1 Forum specifically so I don't have to go to other parts of the forum (which looks somewhat congested and confusing at times). It would just be so nice to have a dedicated thread that contains only photos taken with the X1 on the X1 forum. In addition, it would be great to discuss and dissect the photos with the X1's strengths and weakness in mind. I guess I have been usurped. : (

Photos for sharing, comment and critique go in the photo section. Otherwise you would only be sharing with the few who are interested in the X1. The X1 sub section is for technical and general discussion about the camera.

 

If you restrict yourself to only the X1 sub section, IMHO, you are missing the heart of the forum.

If this thread is not to become a (card)dumping ground, can I suggest simply that you encourage posters to show either their best shots, their shots that illustrate a particular virtue of the X1 or shots for which they would like specific advice or guidance.

 

At the moment the impression that comes across is "Looky! I've got one too!" which is not perhaps what you were trying to achieve in starting this thread. The X1 has come in for a lot of criticism - why not take the opportunity to show what it is truly capable of, and why it deserves serious consideration?

 

I certainly agree that it belongs in the Photo Fora, btw, and that you are missing much (if not the point) by only lurking in the X1 sub-forum.

The shot of the American flyer bicycle was to demonstrate aperture priority depth of field.

 

The shot in the subway was great because I saw the train coming and quickly turned the shutter speed dial to catch the train moving- but not long enough to blur him. This demonstrates the ease of use in the X1 and how it can get out of it's own way.

 

The dog shot demonstrates low-light performance. There was just one really dim light on in the room

 

The shot while riding demonstrates the capability of the auto focus for the impromptu shots.

I say, thanks for sharing. The banality of photography is an interesting topic indeed. I am a painter and sometimes I think that all photography is banal on a certain level (all image, no surface). This doesn't mean I am right but I feel that way nonetheless. To be honest, on this thread so far, I find the most banal photograph to be the food court in the mall (admittedly my rose photo is not far behind). But really, is the photo banal or is the food court banal? Whatever the case, when banality is set to photography, can't it do interesting things? Warhol proved it can. I find this banal food court photograph to be very interesting on a lot of levels, almost alien even. Conversely, I find "successful" photographs like those in National Geographic to be banal in an insipid kind of way. They are so slick, refined, and perfect; in other words, not messy like life, but polished like Heidi Spencer after a day under the scalpel. Now where's my Cinnabon...

To the person who posted the comment about photos being banal: Actually none of the photos posted on this site (and not only on this thread) would win any awards or be included in a gallery at MET. They are all banal. Ansel Adams would not be posting on this site.

 

If you need to have an "explanation" behind each photo, then you are missing the point. It is like explaining a joke (I do realize there are some people who only laugh when a joke is explained to them).
