LeicaFan Posted December 2, 2013 Share #1 Posted December 2, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) So I'm new to leica. just got a summicron 35mm and a clip on lens hood for it. Doesn't the clips scratch the barrel?

madNbad Posted December 3, 2013 Share #2 Posted December 3, 2013 (edited) There are two notches in the lens barrel which mate with two tabs on the hood. They keep the hood from rotating. Edited December 3, 2013 by madNbad Spell check
LeicaFan Posted December 3, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted December 3, 2013 I have version 2 of the sum micron 35mm. it does not have any groove in the lens barrel for the hood to clip in.
joeswe Posted December 3, 2013 Share #4 Posted December 3, 2013 Version II should look like this, and the groove for the clamp on hood is the recessed part of the barrel that carries the aperture index mark (white point). What madNbad writes is valid for the version IV but not for the earlier versions of the Summicron 35. Now, make sure the claws of the hood retract fully when you press down the tabs. Some hoods have very stiff springs and the claws do not retract without a considerable amount of pressure. It is also possible that the mechanism is broken. If you try to mount the hood wihout the claws being fully retraced you could indeed scratch the barrel.
LeicaFan Posted December 3, 2013 Author Share #5 Posted December 3, 2013 yes it does clamp, but the lens hood can still rotate. Is that by design?
k_g_wolf ✝ Posted December 3, 2013 Share #6 Posted December 3, 2013 Yes. Normal for the round metal type for the older lenses.. Only much later square plastic ones didn´t rotate. Was it for the SUMMICRON II or IV or the asph,? Best GEORG
LeicaFan Posted December 3, 2013 Author Share #7 Posted December 3, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) It is for Summicron Version 2. Is there any other lens hood that will work without the rotation? perhaps the square lens hood?
k_g_wolf ✝ Posted December 4, 2013 Share #8 Posted December 4, 2013 Don´t know of another shade, but I´am afraid the square one doesn´t fit the vers. II-lens. The round one is o. k .on a later lens. I use the old type regularly on the vers. IV-SUMMICRON and like it more than the original square shade ... Rotating it doesn´t do much harm, only a slightest abrasion which is hardly to be seen. 250swb Posted December 4, 2013 Share #10 Posted December 4, 2013 You could use a screw on lens hood, cheap, and there are plenty on Ebay. Steve
wda Posted December 4, 2013 Share #11 Posted December 4, 2013 I have not had trouble with the lens like yours. Mine is with the MATE 28-35-50 lens when reversing the lens hood for compactness before placing in a combination bag. The black is rubbed away, despite exercising care when stowing the hood. If I could find a suitable cap so that the hood could stay in place, that would be my preference.
