New Leica store opens in London's Burlington Arcade

Leica's latest London store opened this evening in the famous Burlington Arcade which runs north of Piccadilly in one of the capital's most prestigious shopping areas. MD David Bell gave the showroom a send off in the presence of the great and good of the photographic world. See my report here on MacFilos. Why do we need another dealer in London, and mere yards from Richard Caplan? And yet in Sussex, we loose H A Baker in Lewes so now I have to travel to London.

Presumably because Leica UK care little for their existing dealer network or traditional customer – people who have supported the brand for many years (including when Leica wasn't the flavour of the month).

Point well made. In mitigation, I can say that the boutique in the Burlington Arcade is aimed very clearly at the passing-trade luxury market rather than at the enthusiast Leica user. Richard Caplan was at the launch event, as I saw, and I imagine he doesn't see this as a direct competitor despite the close proximity. After all, Leica Mayfair isn't all that distance away. You and I will probably always gravitate to a Leica specialist such as Caplan, R.G.Lewis or Red Dot and I expect they know that.

That seems apparent in this video, which makes me want to gag…and go back to my modest film days.

If fancy stores and fancy people are their intended market, I'd not bet on their future. But I know nothing about high-end retailing, that's for sure.
