Big F-N Deal !

I know a dozen or so professional shooters, and none owns a Leica digital. Leica needs to do more than recover the case if they want to acquire new users.

 Izay Leicatiman. Your attitude puzzles me. If you are so critical of Leica why are you in this Forum anyway? Perhaps you do not have the extra 550 Euros to spare!

Is that some sort of financial elitism? How about good judgement that elects to forgo the so-called embellishments simply because they make as little sense as your assertion?

Ha. Someone who calls themselves 'leicatiman' is critical of Leica? I don't think so.

With less than a hundred dollars you can make your M9 the cosmetic and handling equivalent of a M9-P. Leather half case, screen protector, and black tape. With black tape, the M9 is barely distinguishable from a M9-P or even a MP at a distance, and that is where it counts.

This camera doesn't even have an upgraded shutter, which the M8.2 brought to the table. And yet Leica are still asking $550 more for it? No thanks. If Leica chose to weatherproof the camera as best they could, upgraded the shutter to an even quieter version and added backlit framelines, that would be more worthwhile. But changes which are largely cosmetic for another $1000? Nope.

What is the bet that the M10 will revert to the normal LCD screen, with a M10-P version that has the sapphire LCD cover being announced another year and a half afterwards?

When I ordered my M9 direct from Solms, I asked for silver chrome, no red dot, no M9 logo and sapphire glass. I was told it was all impossible. That was 4 months ago. It is amazing the speed of technical progress at Leica.

I agree with you. In Switzerland, the country with the strongest currency, the price of the M9 has been reduced and the difference is of 600 US$.

Leica M9-P: Die M9 wird noch professioneller | fotointern.ch - Fotografie Nachrichten

However, it is much cheaper for me to buy in the usa, because I earn $ 1850 !!

ok, everything is more expensive here even if it is unjustified.

The press release stated that the upgrade to M9 M9-P will be possible and price will be communicated by July.

Expensive, that's what it'll be. Needs a new top plate as well as the screen and covering.

Makes me wonder how all you M9 users have managed so far, with a slippy, obtrusive 'in yer face' and fragile camera :D

It's a consumer product. If you want to buy it or not, it's fine. Whichever group you are in there is no need to insult those with a different view.

I too asked Leica just last week if they could let me have a sapphire screen on both my M9s and they said "this service is not possible" but indicated strongly that it would be in the near future. Of course it's not because they can't do it, but because they are not yet in the business of modifying existing models.

I consider it bad taste to cast someone who does not want the product as one who cannot afford it, as if it were necessary to purchase everything Leica introduces. See PiRIUS' post. "Can't afford it then shouldn't be here" is nutz.

Actually I think the M9-P is good news for M9 owners. That means the M10 is still 6-12 months away and we can enjoy our camera longer without a dramatically superior model in competition. I guess they should just stop the M9 production and keep the M9-P only but they probably have some parts to get rid of. I am not a professionnal photographer but I fail to understand all the fuss about the unobtrusiveness and saphire glass. I had my M9 for 9 months and the display is fine (I don't use it much anyway as the photos are always outstanding!). The red dot is not that red and not that conspicuous. Grip: didn't know it was an issue. Unless I am mistaken the M9 price has not changed since introduction 2 years ago. So the price hike for the M9-P is also including "inflation" (which is of course extremely high for luxury products: see watches and bags). I would say the M9-P is targeted at Leica film camera owners, M8 owners and non Leica owners. It is not intended for M9 owners.

I believe when the M9 came out they said the sapphire glass was not put on it because it would raise the price of the camera. Well, as you all can see it did. It seems smart marketing as the M9 owners who really want sapphire glass will sell their M9 and buy the M9P. Remember Leica is in business to sell cameras. I love my M9 and am very happy with it. It is a great tool. When it comes to Cameras and Computers something that looks attractive will always come along. I think I will be happy with my M9 for many years to come. Lenses are where I feel the biggest investment and attention should be placed. I hope Leica does well with the M9P and stays a strong company.

Surprising the amount of negative posts coming from new users. Is it not possible that Leica, after releasing the M9, realized that many of their customers would prefer the mp look and a sapphire LCD screen? Following this realization is it possible that they released this new model not necessarily with intention of current M9 users to buy it, but for new users to have the option? I am sure they will offer a service to add at least the sapphire to current M9's.

Such negativity. If you don't like it...don't buy it. I do agree with Pico though, not buying it has nothing to do with financial circumstances.

What significant things can you not do with an M9 when compared to your M10 fantasies or best guess as to what it might be? (Describe your fantasy M10)

How much are the new features worth to you?

How many years have you used a Leica M (film or digital)?

If the changes entail an entirely different look to the classic M, do you care?

Finally, are you a technology-chaser, a pro or an amateur (in the best meaning of the word)?
