Default Black Skimmers

These birds have a unique way of fishing. They actually skim the water with their beaks open to catch fish. These were taken at Bolsa Chica Ecologic Reserve in Huntington Beach, California.

Canon 1Ds3 with Leica 800/5.6 + Leica 1.4x APO

Skimming (You can see the wake behind the bill)

and the happy result

Thanks for looking,
Peter

Peter -

Skimmers are an attractive, fascinating bird, and you've done them justice. Excellent. Based on your series of bird photos it's clear I need to go to Bolsa Chica Ecologic Reserve on one of my visits to SoCal.

Peter- Excellent as usual. Quite amazing! I spent a couple of hours last week on the bank of a river during a break in my canoe trip, watching, first a Black Naped Tern, then a pelican, a grey heron and a fish eagle all catching fish in turns and was totally fascinated by the unique technique each of these birds uses.

Thank you, Stuart.

Give me a buzz when you're out this way. I'd love to show you around the place.

Mike,

Thank you. That must have been a great treat for you. It is amazing how these wildlife use their different anatomies and make-up to their fullest to eat and survive.
