Northwest Wanderer Posted December 9, 2014 Share #1 Posted December 9, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Bald Eagles have started migrating to my local lake to dine on salmon. It's a year end treat for all the photographers in this region. I look foreword to many days photographing these great birds. Welcome, dear visitor! Northwest Wanderer Posted December 9, 2014 Author Share #6 Posted December 9, 2014 Thank you for the positive comments Hank, K-H, Ece & Paul. Hank, to answer your question, I'm trying out the new V-Lux camera with a 25 to 400 mm zoom. This image is from my first outing with the camera. I find the focus is very fast which helps with bird photography. K-H, I'm a lucky guy to live in an area along the eagle migration route. Ece & Paul, I'm delighted you find my eagle photos enjoyable to view. I'll be trying a for more flight images this year. I always find that challenging. Northwest Wanderer Posted December 9, 2014 Author Share #11 Posted December 9, 2014 Thank you Dee, Yup, I'm a lucky guy and I know it. Check out this link for some information about the eagles in my area. Wolf Lodge Bay Eagle Watch It's been a slow start for eagle watching but if you look at the years past data, you'll see we get a large number of birds.
fotografr Posted December 9, 2014 Share #12 Posted December 9, 2014 Can't wait to see more, Bill. You're off to a good start. I hope they leave some salmon for you.
Northwest Wanderer Posted December 9, 2014 Author Share #13 Posted December 9, 2014 Thanks Brent, It's funny about the salmon. You can walk under trees a good distance from the shoreline and find fish bones under the trees. The eagles like to eat the salmon from atop their favorite trees. When the birds have left I imagine the tourists wonder about fish so far from the water.

platypus Posted December 11, 2014 Share #16 Posted December 11, 2014 Thank you Dee, Yup, I'm a lucky guy and I know it. Check out this link for some information about the eagles in my area. Wolf Lodge Bay Eagle Watch It's been a slow start for eagle watching but if you look at the years past data, you'll see we get a large number of birds. Thanks Bill...really interesting!! You certainly do get a huge turn-out off birds, but the numbers appear to be declining each year, is that a concern or normal ebb and flow? I wondered if the same birds return to the same hunting ground each year with their offspring.
Northwest Wanderer Posted December 11, 2014 Author Share #17 Posted December 11, 2014 Dee, Glad you found the link interesting. To date the bird numbers are on the low side this season. I've noticed there have not been many salmon along the shoreline so the spawning is ether slow or it's an off year cycle. At the next large lake to the north (15 miles +/-) the salmon have spawned and the number of eagles attracted to that location has been increasing every year. Best I know, the birds return to their familiar nesting grounds if the food supply and other environmental conditions are suitable. It's always enjoyable seeing these birds. I look forward to it every year.
Louis Posted December 11, 2014 Share #18 Posted December 11, 2014 Bill, this is really a superb shot and you made a really nice framing (composition)! On my monitor, it looks a little over-sharpened; I see white lines around the shapes that are usually caused by sharpening too much!... But it could be the calibration of my monitor! Northwest Wanderer Posted December 11, 2014 Author Share #19 Posted December 11, 2014 Thank you Louis and yes you are correct about the sharpness. It was a long telephoto shot and I sharpened it a lot to salvage the image. Good observation on your part.
