A tapir, upwind of us. It may have heard us trying to be quiet, but relying on its keen sense of smell we went unnoticed and it ventured out onto the savanah, fairly certain we were not jaguar nor puma. We had only seen a tapir once before, 14 years ago, around midnigh, from a blind where we huddled since sunset in the Peruvian Manu rain forest. The photos below are in the Brazilian Pantanal.
